disease, I am involved with
Alzheimer's causes," says Kind,
briefly married in 1983 to the late
actor and casting director Randy
Stone. "My mother taught us that
tzedakah is important.
"Because I had a puppy that I had
to put down, I got involved with
getting donations for animal chari-
ties in his name. If I didn't have my
guy to take care of, I was going to
take care of others.
"I just did a benefit in San
Francisco for Help Is on the Way,
which is a yearly event for AIDS
causes. I have some friends I lost to
the disease."
As Kind prepares for her
Michigan show, she looks back on
a professional tour she did with her
sister. In 2013, they went through
North America and Europe before
finishing in Tel Aviv.
"It was fabulous touring with
Barbra," she says. "As much as we
had sung together in the house, it
was the first time we sang together
professionally."
Kind recalls that the two were
very close as she grew up.
The young Kind would visit a
Chinese restaurant where Barbra

worked and was invited to pass out
lollipops to youngsters dining with
their parents.
With friends who also were sis-
ters and had the same age differ-
ence, trips to the beach became a
favorite activity.
Both singers had religious train-
ing.
"[Our relationship] changed
when Barbra got busy with her
work," Kind says. "More recently,
we've exercised and shopped
together.
"I need people. I don't get lost
in things. I'm into New Age. I love
meaningful occasions to discuss
astrology and psychic phenomena.
I think that adds to my spirituality
and Jewishness." ❑

Issie enjoys spending time with
the dog who shares the spotlight
as "Sandy:' Before training on how
to handle her "puppy" onstage, she
had a lot of experience with pets;
Issie has bonded with three dogs
and two cats at home.
For her Detroit performances,
Issie will be watched by her dad
and brother, Maxwell, a 12-year-old
preparing for his bar mitzvah. (The
Detroit run of Annie intersects with
Yom Kippur, but Issie and her mom
hope to attend temple Saturday
morning, Oct. 4, before Issie takes
the stage.)

"Issie is a steady child:' her mom
says. "When we found out about

talk about that and how fortunate
we are to have all this."
Issie takes the idea further.
"I've gotten to know the other
cast members, and I'm lucky
because they're super-nice:' the
emerging stage star says. "Some
people are not nice at all:'
