Scott Stern Named
New Federation COO

T

he Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit has
named Scott Stern as its chief
operating officer. After more than 25
years as an entrepreneur, community
leader and philanthropist, Stern says
he is excited to partner with Scott
Kaufman, CEO, a to assure a strong
and sustainable Jewish future.
As COO, Stern
will focus on inno-
vating and growing
the Federation as
well as align-
ing operations to
better position
the organization to

ate and long-term
objectives. His charge will be to maxi-
mize Federation's potential to build
Jewish identity, strengthen community
and accelerate philanthropy.
"Scott is a remarkably dynamic and
accomplished individual, and one who
clearly has a tremendous passion for
the Jewish community:' Kaufman said.
"I am beyond excited to welcome his
unique creativity, business-savvy and
strategic vision to Federation."
Stern graduated from the University
of Michigan's School of Music in 1990
with a degree in composition and
piano. In 1994, he joined his wife,
Lisa, founder of Big Communications.
Under their leadership, that company
evolved into a full-service communica-
tions agency focused on health and
wellness, growing from a startup to
120 employees. Scott was responsible
for corporate strategy, sales, market-
ing and communications and creative
solutions.
In 2008, they sold the company
to Meredith Corporation, and he
remained there until 2011. Since then,
Stern has focused on a variety of entre-
preneurial endeavors and was asked
to assume the role of entrepreneur in
residence at the University of Chicago,
a position that involves professional
consulting, mentoring and shaping of
new business concepts there.

through work at Federation was a

Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel,
where Stern has been involved as a
congregant, musician and lay leader.

The Sterns and their three children,
