Athletes from the Detroit tennis team share Jewish values of caring and
charity by preparing mats for Detroit Public School students to use during
the National Council of Jewish Women's reading program.

The other Detroit tennis coaches
were Marlene Myers, Bruce Gursky,
Donna Sklar and Jodi Neirynck.

Gold On Diamond

After winning a silver medal in 2012
and losing several close games in
2013, the Detroit 16U baseball team
finally won gold.
Detroit beat New Jersey/
Minneapolis 8-1 in the gold-medal
game, avenging its only loss of the
tournament.
Jonny Goldberg was the Detroit
manager and Paul Berkey was the
coach. Players were Jack Berkey, Josh
Goldberg, Alex Kaufman, Josh Lewis,
Harrison Milen, Matt Pantelic, Nolan
Rogow, Max Rosenfeld, Brandon
Rothenberg, Ethan Scherrer, Jared
Scherrer and Seth Warren.
Milen struck out five and threw a
one-hitter in the gold-medal game.
Jack Berkey knocked in five runs,
Pantelic drove in two and Josh
Goldberg had the other Detroit RBI.
Detroit opened with a 6-5 win over

Philadelphia, rallying from a 5-1
deficit. New Jersey/Minneapolis beat
Detroit 5-0, but Detroit won twice
(21-0 over another Detroit team and
13-4 over Toronto) and went to the
semifinals.
Toronto was the opponent once
again and Detroit won 7-2.
"We played outstanding defense,
and our pitching was superb
throughout the tournament:'
Goldberg said. "We hardly made
any mistakes. Also, our hitting was
timely. Many players had clutch hits
in clutch situations:'
Four-year Maccabi Games partici-
pants Josh Goldberg, Ethan Scherrer
and Jared Scherrer helped carry
the Detroit banner at the opening
ceremonies at the Fox Theatre, and
they spoke about the Israeli athletes
who were murdered in 1972 at the
Munich Olympics.
Jack Berkey, Josh Goldberg, Milen,
Rosenfeld, Warren, Ethan Scherrer
and Jared Scherrer won gold and silver
medals over the past three years.
