the Rocky theme song and
stay out of her way! Those who
know Ronnie Fagin, 94, of
Southfield call her a superstar, an inspi-
ration and one tough cookie. The pint-
sized powerhouse throws hooks and jabs
with the best of them in weekly kickbox-
ing classes at Franklin Athletic Club in
Southfield.
The three daughters she raised with
her late husband, Dr. Donald Fagin, her
eight grandchildren and 10 great-grand-
children are some of her biggest fans —
and so is trainer George Jones. He was
once a sparring partner with a German
heavyweight-boxing champion, and even
he's impressed. He says Ronnie's age is
not an obstacle.
"She comes to class with her own box-
ing gloves, her own gear and everything"
Jones explains. "She does all the moves,
all the punches. When we get a new
person in class, she shows them how to
do it"
Fagin has a regular spot and punching
bag she uses in the classes she attends
two to three times a week. She still drives
herself to and from the gym. She also
does Zumba, a high-energy
exercise routine that com-
bines aerobics and dance
moves.
"It's dynamic; I find it
wonderful. It's a wonderful
release," she says about her
fitness routine. "Boxing is
great for upper body and
arm strength. It takes care
of your whole body and
it's very good for the brain,
too. Every senior should

The only thing Fagin
doesn't do anymore is
kick. She's careful not to
lose her balance after undergoing hip
replacement surgery. The former Detroit
elementary school reading teacher says
she's been active all her life, playing ten-
nis and doing a variety of physical activi-
ties. She started boxing about 10 years
ago at age 84.
"You have to do it in moderation, at
your own speed" she advises. "You can't
compete with others"
Jones says when people who are 50-60
years old express reservations about
being able to keep up with his advanced

class, he tells them about Ronnie.
"I think she teaches all of us a lesson
about the joy of living" he says. "She's
doing the things she loves. Everyone
looks at her and says, 'This is unbeliev-
able! I want to be just like her!"'

Fagin will celebrate her
95th birthday in mid-October
with family and friends. It
will be a more low-key cel-
ebration than the blow-out
dance party she threw last
year at Franklin. Her grand-
daughter, Laura Meisner of
Boston, and other family
members say they can't wait
to celebrate another remark-
able year.
"Over the years, I have con-
strikes a
tinually admired her zest for
life and admittedly am often
exhausted in attempts to keep
up with her constant trips to
the DIA, the theater or pop-culture lec-
tures" Meisner says.
"Not only is she physically fit (she
occasionally wears 'Shut Up and Work
Out' T-shirts), but she also is perhaps
the most stylish, eclectic person I've met
in my life. More importantly, she is an
incredibly loving, caring and giving per-
son. It's quite amazing"
