JN

here was no stopping the
Detroit inline hockey team
last month at the JCC
Maccabi Games & ArtsFest.
Playing with extra motivation,
Detroit won all six games it played at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield and outscored its oppo-
nents 40-9 in winning its first gold
medal since 2009.
The motivation was wrapped in sad-
ness.
Theresa Fulgenzi, the first director
of the JCC's inline hockey center and
the Detroit Maccabi team's assistant
coach in 2011, died last year shortly
after the Detroit team participated in
the Maccabi Games in Orange County,
Calif.
To honor her last year while she was
gravely ill, Detroit inline hockey play-
ers used hockey tape to put a "T" on
their helmets.
"Theresa taught, coached or impact-
ed every single one my [2014] players:'
said Detroit coach Bryan Robbins.
"It was great that in the first Maccabi
Games since her passing, we won the
gold medal in the arena she helped
build:'
This year, each Detroit player had
a "T-Strong" patch on his jersey to
honor Fulgenzi.
Team captain Brandon Glasser said
Fulgenzi taught him how to skate
when he was 4 or 5.
"I think she taught half our team
how to skate:' he said. "She was a huge
influence on us. We played every game
for her. Thinking about her kept us
motivated:'
This was Robbins' sixth year as the
Detroit inline hockey coach. He called
this year's group probably the most
special he's coached.
"The kids rose to the occasion:' he
said. "They played possessed and were
on a mission from the drop of the puck
in the first game. It was a wonder-
ful experience playing in front of our
home fans and at the JCC."

Coaches Ivan Glasser and Bryan
Robbins

Glasser led the way offensively with
16 goals in the six games and goalie
Steven Friedland had a 1.50 goals-
against average.
Assistant captains Zach Raider and
Josh Solomon, Bryce Kallen, Andrew
Nathan, Noah Past and Adam Raab
also were on the roster.
The players range in age from 13-16
and live in communities ranging from
West Bloomfield to Farmington Hills
and Walled Lake.
Glasser said the team's depth was the
biggest reason for its unbeaten record.
"In past years, we had three or four
good skaters:' Robbins said. "This
year, everyone was a good skater:'
Detroit beat Toronto 5-1 in the gold
medal game. Glasser scored twice and
Raider, Kallen and Nathan had the
other goals.
This was the fourth time Glasser
played for the Detroit inline hockey
team at the Maccabi Games and the
first time he won a gold medal.
He's now too old to participate in
the Maccabi Games, so he ended his
career on a perfect note.
The 16-year-old North Farmington
High School junior also competed
in Maccabi Games in Philadelphia,
Rockland County, N.Y., and Orange
County. The team won a silver medal
last year in Orange County.
Ivan Glasser was the team's assistant
coach this season and Daniel Glasser
was the team manager.
