A representative at the Lone Soldier Center with Jill and Joseph Greenbaum
Her brother, Paul Fischer, and his
wife, Dr. Karoline Puder of Southfield,
and her sister and brother-in-law, Karen
and Dr. Joel Kahn of West Bloomfield,
helped with the purchases.
The Greenbaums encourage others to
make donations. "I specifically went to
them because Detroit has so many lone
soldiers that many of us are connected
to," Jill said.
The Greenbaums, too, have a connec-
tion. Elana's sister, Naomi, is a former
lone soldier. "We had the privilege of
greeting her aliyah flight:' Jill said. "It
was an amazing experience we will
never forget — with singing, shofar
blowing and dancing:'
Avi Greenbaum's teen program
included filling care packages for IDF
soldiers. "They are truly happy to know
we care Jill said. "We can be helpful,
instead of helpless regarding our sol-
diers, especially the lone soldiers:'
Elana knows from watching her
friends who are lone soldiers. "They
instantly become each other's family
and support system:' she said. "Having
the backing of the Lone Soldier Center
means the soldiers will always have
people looking out for them:'
Officially titled the Lone Soldier
Center in memory of Michael Levin, it
was created by former lone soldiers and
named for an Israeli paratrooper who
made aliyah from Philadelphia in 2002
and died fighting for Israel in 2006.
"Michael Levin's life story motivates
me and many others:' Elana said.
"Anyone who promotes his legacy is
bringing honor to him that he didn't
give his life for nothing:'
Life In Israel
"I've known since high school that I
wanted to make aliyah," said Elana, a
graduate of Akiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield. "At Akiva, I received an edu-
cation that cultivated a love for Israel and
Judaism, and I was able to interact on a
daily basis with Israelis firsthand:'
During most summers, she attended
or worked at the Zionist Camp Stone
in Pennsylvania. Having been to Israel
many times with her family, and with
Mach Hach BaAretz in 2011, Elana spent
this past year at the Stella K. Abraham
Beit Midrash for Women-Migdal Oz of
Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion.
This time she returns to Israel to do
Sherut Leumi (national service). "She
will most likely be working in a school,
possibly with special needs kids," her
mom said. "Eventually, she will go to
university there. Elana's path has clearly
been to fulfill her dream of making
aliyah and living in Israel. This is her
heart and soul; she lives and breathes
Israel."
The Greenbaums encourage all of
their children's connections with Israel,
no matter what the situation.
"I'm really lucky to have such a sup-
portive family," Elana said. "It's times
like these that my will to be there is
stronger; to stay away is to let those that
hate us succeed:'
Joseph Greenbaum said, "Ardent
Zionism and staunch support for Israel
has been a part of my family for as long
as I can remember, going back to the
early 1970s when my grandparents pur-
chased an apartment in Jerusalem and
spent considerable time there before
it became fashionable. Jill and I have
continued that tradition in raising our
children, and I am immensely proud of
them for choosing to live there
The couple never considered post-
poning Elana's move or bringing Avi
home during this summer's tension.
"Israel needs us and we need to show
support by being there Jill said. "Israel
is so special, and we are lucky to have
it. I don't have concerns about their liv-
ing there. My only issue is that it is far:'
Avi told his mom that pictures on the
Internet make it appear that the whole
country is a war zone, but he says that
isn't the case. "Of course, in the south, it
is," Jill said. "But Avi said life goes on in
Israel. They take cover when the sirens
go off, and resume their life. This is
their reality:'
Elana described her feelings about
living in Israel as "pure excitement:'
"There's just something so special
about walking the streets of our Jewish
homeland, and to really be able to call it
home is incredible she said. "Israel has
already given me so much, and I can't
wait to take the opportunity to give a
little bit back:'
