Living The Dream

Elana Greenbaum starts a new life
in Israel with full family support.

uring

the past weeks, while
the media showed Israelis
living amidst sirens and
rocket fire, Elana Greenbaum, 18, of
Southfield was excitedly packing her
bags, getting ready to become one of
them.
At the same time, her parents were
booking their own flights to Israel and
shopping for donations to take with
them for Israeli soldiers.
On Aug. 10, Jill and Joseph
Greenbaum flew to New York with their
daughter, and then continued on to
Israel. The next day, Elana traveled with
Nefesh B'Nefesh, a nonprofit organiza-
tion that promotes, encourages and
facilitates aliyah (immigration to Israel)
from North America.
Elana's first cousin, Aaron Lieblich,
18, son of Ken and former Detroiter
Dena (Greenbaum) Lieblich of
Highland Park, N.J., was on the same
plane. Aaron was among 108 of the
passengers who will serve in the Israel
Defense Forces.
When the plane landed Aug. 12, the
338 travelers were welcomed by a huge
crowd that included Israeli President
Reuven Rivlin. Greeting the cousins
were their parents; Aaron's sister,
Tamar, 15; Elana's brother, Avi, 15, in
Israel on Bnei Akiva's summer program,

Mach Hach BaAretz; and their sister
and brother-in-law, Naomi, 22, and
Yehonatan Buskila, 25, an Israeli army
intelligence officer, who live in Rehovot.
The Greenbaums attended the
arrival ceremony wearing T-shirts with
"Detroit Loves Israel" — complete with
a Detroit Tigers' D — on the back.
"It is difficult to put into words the
pure happiness Joseph and I felt at see-
ing Elana get off the plane Jill said.
"Her face said it all, and we mirror
that. We are fortunate we were able to
be there to embrace her in the biggest
hug ever. Having our family together
only happens a few times a year, so it is
precious to us. Being together in Israel,
makes it even better:'

Packing Heavy

Jill and Joseph traveled to Israel with
some unusual gifts, including lots and
lots of deodorant.
"I contacted the Michael Levin Lone
Soldier Center to see if they needed
anything during these difficult times,"
Jill said. The Israeli nonprofit organiza-
tion assists those who come from the
diaspora and voluntarily serve in the
Israeli military, many without immedi-
ate family in Israel.
"They asked for flashlight head lamps
— for tunnels and for medics to work on
patients — travel size laundry detergent
and Old Spice deodorant," she said. "I
was told that Israelis love Old Spice:'
