t may have seemed incongruous
that the blowing of the shofar
would herald the dedication
of a new innovation hub at Hillel
Day School. But the intersection of
tradition, ushering in the month of
Elul with the shofar, and innovation
illustrated the seamless symmetry
between Judaism and 21st-century
education as the school celebrated the
opening of the Audrey and William
Farber Family IDEA Collaborative on
Aug. 27.
The collaborative includes a maker
space, production studio, greenhouse
and new art, music and science stu-
dios as well as a new cafeteria, three
new kitchens and a central heart for
presentations and large gatherings.
All the spaces are designed for pro-
ject-based learning and small group
work, giving students opportunities
to acquire the skills they will need in
an ever-changing economy, in which
most jobs have not yet been invented.
"Our education is aligning with
what Jews have always known —
that we are meant to create, listen
and deliberate together to prob-
lem solve. References to such are
found throughout the Torah and the
Talmud:' said Steve Freedman, head
of school, at the dedication attended
by about 500 present and past par-
ents, students, faculty and commu-
nity members.
Audrey and William Farber are
longtime Hillel grandparents who
have made Jewish education the
focus of their philanthropy. Their
$5 million gift to Hillel enabled the
transformation of the school; and
their generosity was acknowledged at
the dedication by both Rabbi Harold
Loss of Temple Israel, who acts as the
family's philanthropic adviser, and
Scott Kaufman, Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit CEO.
"Detroit is the best place to be
Jewish in America, thanks largely in
part to families like the Farbers, whose
commitment to tzedakah helps and
strengthens are entire community for
generations to come Kaufman said.
"It is a beautiful space said
Freedman. "More importantly, it
catapults Hillel to a new level in our
ability to provide our children with
the education and experiences they
need."
