metro Scholar To Focus On Conversion In Europe The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University is sponsoring a lec- ture by Todd Endelman, William Haber Professor Emeritus of Modern Jewish History at the University of Michigan, at noon Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Faculty Administration Building, Room 2339. The talk, co- sponsored by the WSU Humanities Center, is titled "Was Conversion an Effective Strategy for Integration Todd into European Endelman Society?" Endelman, a leading expert on Anglo-Jewish history, has spent decades exploring the nuances of Jewish assimilation and the Jewishness of Jewish converts to Christianity in Europe and America. In works such as Jewish Apostasy in the Modern World and Disraeli's Jewishness, Endelman has described how Jewish assimi- lation was not an either/or propo- sition, but a complex navigation between the Jewish and non- Jewish worlds. Rather than dismiss Jewish converts to Christianity as being devoid of any sense of Jewish identity, Endelman has shown that, even after conversion, Jewish apostates often remained connected to their families and Jewish friends, and even to the Jewish community. Thus, Endelman argues, Jewish converts are more accurately understood as a radical form of Jewish assimila- tion. Endelman's talk is the first of the Center's 2014-2015 series of monthly colloquia. Future lec- tures in this series include Saeed Khan (WSU) talking about con- flict in the Middle East, Alexis Zimberg speaking about Putin and Russian Jewry, Michael Scrivner (WSU) speaking on Messianic imagery in English literature, and Todd Hasak-Lowy speaking about the recent works of Israeli writer David Grossman. The Sept. 18 talk is free and open to the public.
