Shofar Factory Fest
Upgrades, Expands
There's a buzz in town of the new
attractions taking place Sept.
21 at the fourth annual Sherrill
Berman Shofar Factory Festival
(SBSFF) inside and outside the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. Hop on a live
camel, sand down a ram's horn,
bounce yourself dizzy, layer
ingredients for honey cake in a
jar or create your Hebrew name
bracelet.
The festival is a community-
wide event that allows adults and
children to engage in educational
activities in preparation for the
High Holidays. Scheduled just
before Rosh Hashanah, events
also include an exotic shofar
display featuring horns from
many animals and a scribe giv-
ing hands-on demonstrations on
Hebrew letter writing. Jerusalem
Pizza will be sold at a discount
price.
Admission and many attrac-
tions are available free. To take
home your own shofar, there is a
$10 fee; a camel ride is $5. Family
package: $50. For more info or to
reserve your shofar, visit www.
ShofarFactoryFestival.com .
This event is brought to you
by the Tugman Bais Chabad,
Sherrill Berman Art Education
Fund, Janice Charach Art Gallery,
Shalom Street, the JCC and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.

Beth Olam Cemetery
Open Sunday Sept. 21
The board of trustees of
Clover Hill Park Cemetery in
Birmingham and Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield will
welcome the community to visit
Beth Olam Cemetery in Detroit
(Smith Street Cemetery) on
Sunday Sept. 21 between 10 a.m.
and 1 p.m.
Beth Olam Cemetery was estab-
lished in 1862 and remains one
of the oldest historic sites in the
Detroit Jewish community. With
the cooperation of the cities of
Detroit and Hamtramck and the
support of General Motors, Beth
Olam has retained the dignity
and spirituality of its founders.
Beth Olam is located on the site
of the GM Cadillac (Poletown)
Plant. Entrance to the cemetery
is the through the truck gate, and
plant security will assist visitors
in locating the cemetery site.
