INSIGNIA OF THE JEWISH LEGION

E

ver hear of the "Jewish Legion?"
In 1914, 100 years ago, at the
outbreak of World War I, Eretz
Israel was part of the Turkish Empire.
After Turkey joined with Germany,
ideas were soon generated regarding
the formation of a Jewish combat force
to help liberate Eretz Israel. Through
the efforts of Vladimir Jabontinsky
and Joseph Trumpeldor, the Zion Mule
Corps was formed. In 1916, after the ill-
fated Gallipoli Campaign, this unit was
dissolved.
On July 27, 1917, however, the British
War Office ordered the organization of

a Jewish Legion. The units subsequently
formed were known as battalions of the
British Army's Royal Fusiliers. More
than 10,000 volunteers served in the
five Jewish battalions. In its first official
action in August 1917, the battalions of
the Legion participated in the liberation
of Palestine. Five thousand Jewish sol-
diers fought along with allied forces in
the liberation effort. After WWI ended
on Nov. 11, 1918, most of the battalions
were discharged. In 1919, the Jewish
Legion was reduced to one battalion, the
"First Judeans."
