here's no doubt about the
talent of the 18 golfers who
competed for Detroit last
month at the JCC Maccabi Games &
ArtsFest.
They won a golf bag full of med-
als for stroke play, long drive and
closest-to-the-pin contests and a team
scramble event held at Knollwood,
Franklin Hills and Tam-O-Shanter
country clubs.
What the golfers did on their day off
was special, too.
They went to an Oak Park senior
citizen home and played bingo with
residents for their JCC Cares commu-
nity service project.
Several golfers also were called upon
at the last minute to play sports with
young adult special athletes in the gym
at the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
"A baseball team that was supposed
to play with the athletes couldn't
make it:' said Detroit golf coach Kevin
Taylor.
Taylor said JCC Cares coordinators
and Franci Silver, the Detroit delega-
tion head, found him at the JCC and
asked if his golfers could fill in for the
baseball team.
"I tracked down about half our team
at the JCC. Not one turned down the
opportunity. They all had a great time
Taylor said.
Silver presented Taylor and the golf-
ers who played with the athletes with
midot tovot (good traits) medals.
A total of 20 golfers competed at
the Maccabi Games. In addition to the
Detroit contingent, there was one golf-
er from Orange County Calif., and one
golfer from Westchester County, N.Y.
Here's how the Detroit golfers fared:
Zach Felsenfeld (14U) won three
gold medals, a silver medal and midot
tovot medal. He had the best 36-hole
score in the tournament with a 78 and
80 at Knollwood and Franklin Hills,
respectively. He will be a freshman at
Cranbrook-Kingswood High School in
Bloomfield Hills this fall and plans to
play golf, hockey and tennis there.
Mikaela Schulz (14U) won three gold
medals, a silver medal and midot tovot
medal. Her 74 at Knollwood from the
women's tees was the lowest score of the
tournament. She's 12 years old.
Dylan Wittenberg (14U) won two
gold, two silver and two bronze med-
als. One gold was for closest-to-the-pin
at Franklin Hills. He landed his tee
shot six inches away from the cup
on the ninth hole. He shot 81 and 84
at Knollwood and Franklin Hills. He
hopes to be on the boys golf team at
Bloomfield Hills High School next
spring.
Jack Walt (14U) won two gold and
three bronze medals and a midot
tovot medal. He shot 86 and 82 at
Knollwood and Franklin Hills.
Jacob Taylor (16U) won two gold,
one silver and two bronze medals and a
midot tovot medal. He won a long drive
gold at Knollwood on his first shot of
the tournament and chipped in from
the rough behind the green on the same
hole for a birdie. He hopes to be on the
West Bloomfield High School boys golf
team next spring as a sophomore.
Alex Relle (16U) won four silver
medals. He'll be a junior at Cranbrook-
Kingwood, where he'll help the boys
golf team defend its Michigan High
School Athletic Association Division 2
state championship next spring.
Matt Cohen (14U) and Josh Cohen
(14U) each won two midot tovot med-
als. Alex Gold (14U) and Mitchell Labe
(14U) each won a midot tovot medal.
Corey Lipton (16U) overcame a bro-
ken collarbone suffered while playing
soccer to compete in Maccabi golf and
won two gold medals and one silver
medal. He plays soccer and golf for
Berkley High School.
Zack Collen (16U) joined the
Maccabi golf team after the bowling
competition was canceled because of
a small field and won one gold medal
and one bronze medal. He plays golf
for North Farmington High School.
Justin Frommer (16U) is a sports
broadcaster at West Bloomfield High
School. He won a gold medal.
Joey Wolberg (14U), Jonah Lusky
(14U), Isaac Mintz (14U), Noah
Goodman (14U) and Noah Kahan
(14U) also won medals. Lusky is a
cousin of Maccabi golf assistant coach
Wayne Lusky. Kahan is a standout ten-
nis player.
