Young visitors check out a reproduction of Bernardo Be!lotto's View of the

Get Inside/Out!

magine walking along on a day
when the air is so smooth it feels
like silk, and all around are the tiny
voices of laughing children, and the
birds are singing and the trees are just
starting to turn as fall approaches, and
suddenly you see it, straight ahead on
your path: a painting by Edward Degas.
Now in its fifth year, Inside/Out
is a project of the Detroit Institute
of Arts that brings reproductions
of works from the museum's collec-
tion to outdoor venues throughout
Metro Detroit. The DIA already has
installed more than 700 reproduc-
tions in 98 cities, including, this year,
Oak Park, with two works on display
at the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and another
eight throughout the city.
In celebration of the event, the Oak
Park JCC will present "Step into Art at
the J!" with a children's art project, a
free concert and a chance to view two
DIA reproductions: Degas' Violinist
with a Young Woman and Bernardo
Bellotto's View of the Tiber with the
Castle SantAngelo.
"This event is a fantastic synergy
between the DIA, the city of Oak
Park, the JCC and the Sherrill Berman
Children's Art Education Fund:' said
Judy Front, who is coordinating the
program. "Families will be enjoying
the music and creating a mosaic tile
project together while viewing and
learning about DIA masterpieces"
Degas used oil and crayons to create
Violinist with a Young Woman in 1871,
and DIA Director Graham W.J. Beal
notes a curiosity in this piece: "The
figures are meticulously rendered,
but the canvas is unfinished at the
lower edge. Degas often returned to
paintings — sometimes after decades

INCLUDES FRESH FRUIT
AND 2 COFFEES

— but not this one. Perhaps he con-
sidered it 'finished' after all:'
Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) was
an Italian artist known for his paint-
ings of landscapes and architecture.
He also served as court painter for
King Stanislaus Augustus Ponatowski
(the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth), beginning in 1768.
View of the Tiber shows a clear
sky and a river, along with a loom-
ing tower that became the site of
many famous and infamous incidents
throughout history and was the setting
for the third act of the opera Tosca.
"Step into Art at the J!" brings music
into the equation with a free concert
featuring the Motor City Brass Band,
conducted by Craig Strain. The group,
ranked among North America's top
competition brass bands, was founded in
1996 and has appeared at the Kennedy
Center for Performing Arts and with the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
The day also will feature the mosaic
project, with guest artist Michael
Phillips, for children of all ages. The
cost for the project, open to the first
50 participants, is $3 per child.
In conjunction with the event,
the JCC will offer outdoor programs
including Yoga Yeladim, Samurai Sword
and Tai Chi, plus bicycle tours of all
of Oak Park's DIA replica pieces, with
works by Brueghel the Elder, Van Gogh,
Suzuki Kitsu, Reginald Marsh, Francis
Wheatley, John Singleton Copley and
Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton.
