Perhaps your ill-fitting dentures make it hard to chew your food right, making you wary to dine out with friends. Thankfully, with medical advances in dental implants, you don't have to live that way anymore. Dr. Mark A. Kohn, owner of Apple Dental and Implant Center in Warren, can help. Apple Dental has been serving the community since 1992 and can provide dentures and dental implants all in one day — giving you back a beautiful and confident smile. Dr. Kohn has always been enamored of beautiful smiles. He knew at the age of 11 he was going to pursue a career in dentistry. Dr. Kohn, who lives in Walled Lake with his wife, Leslee, and their five children, attends services at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Dr. Kohn has been practicing dentistry since 1987, completing both his dental degree from U of D and his general practice residency at Booth Memorial Medical Center in New York. He has furthered his education training under renowned Dr. Arun Garg, author and surgical trainer who wrote the book on contemporary implant dentistry. The International Dental Implant Association certifies Dr. Kohn at the "master's level." This specialized training makes him uniquely qualified to provide complete dental implant care and perform all aspects of dental implant surgery. A cosmetically pleasing smile can be accomplished with just a single implant to replace one missing tooth. Without disturbing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, a dental implant can be used for a natural looking result. Using several single tooth implants together can replace missing teeth in an area where once the only choice a patient had was a removable partial denture. The importance of dental implants helps to maintain and preserve the function of the alveolar bone in the jaw. Long-term use of dentures always results in bone loss due to lack of load placed on the jaw. Instead of traditional removable dentures, fixed implants can be used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. QUICK AND VIRTUALLY PAINLESS PROCESS Dr. Kohn uses All-on-4 dental implants, which provide a permanent, screw- retained, same-day replacement for the entire upper and/or lower set of teeth. The treatment consists of establishing a fully customized denture (bridge) based a Dental Implant only on four titanium implants. These implants act as "pillars" to the bridge that supports the dentures. The procedure is for patients with significant tooth loss or decay and for people whose bone loss in the jaw area prevents them from getting traditional dental treatments. Dr. Kohn services everyone from young adults who have congenitally missing teeth or who have lost teeth in an accident to older adults who have lost teeth to decay or periodontal disease. "The dental implants are so natural- looking and feeling you may forget that you ever lost a tooth," he says. The whole process can be handled in one day at Dr. Kohn's office. Patients can be given I.V. sedation or oral anesthesia and experience little discomfort. "Most patients return to normal activities in one to two days," he says. The implants are virtually maintenance- free. "You can brush them and use a water pick every day just like you would your natural teeth," Dr. Kohn says. "Every six to eight months, the dentures are unscrewed from the implants to clean the gums." The implants also help people eat a more nutritious diet. "When a denture stays in, people can chew their food more effectively," Dr. Kohn says. "Those with ill-fitting dentures tend to avoid hard- to-chew foods like vegetables and other nutrient-dense foods. When the denture stays down, people can chew virtually everything." A more beautiful smile does more than build self-esteem and confidence. The benefits are wide-ranging and can impact every area of a patient's life, Dr. Kohn says. The experts agree. "When someone has a big smile, it shows they're willing to open up and expose a part of themselves," says Pamela McClain, DDS, a past president of the American Academy of Periodontology. "Over the long term, smiling can benefit your health, perception at work and social life." A confident smile can also help you appear self-assured and on top of your work. Studies have shown that those who smile are more likely to earn more money and are more readily approached with business ideas and offered more advancements. A confident smile can also make you look younger. Smiles naturally lift the face. Studies have shown when you smile, you look years younger on average. Investing in your smile is really investing in your total well being! Dr. Kohn invites patients considering dental implants to come to his office for a free evaluation and a full set of x-rays. Apple Dental is located on Hoover Road, just north of 1-696, in Warren. "It's closer to the Jewish community than many would think," he says. ❑ September 4 • 2014 27
