week, the volunteer crew helped her
sort her possessions between what
could and could not be salvaged, and
tore up and disposed of the basement
flooring, wood paneling and drywall
where black mold had already started
to grow. Next, they thoroughly dis-
infected and dried the basement for
future renovations.
According to Glick, this work saves
such a homeowner between $3,000 to
$7,000. He expects the team to be able
to clean approximately one to four
homes per day, depending on home
size and extent of the damage.
Glick said his work aligns his Jewish,
Israeli and global identities because
the work is something he is proud to
stand behind. Speaking for some of
his volunteers who live in southern
Israel, which has endured the brunt of
the rocket attacks, the work lets them
"channel their anger and frustrations
into something good and healing.
"Disasters foster a lot of unity and
resilience and coming together," he
said. "It puts things into perspective
in my own personal life. Every place
we go, we get back more than we
give."

Flood Relief
Efforts
ewish Family Service (JFS) con-
tinues to administer emergency
financial assistance for eligible
Jewish community members. On Aug. 28,
JFS held a community information ses-
sion regarding flood recovery at Young
Israel of Oak Park, with 75 exhausted and
overwhelmed homeowners attending.
They heard from experts, including
Ethan Gross, vice president and COO
at Globe Midwest Insurance Adjustors
International; Adam Becker, president of
Statewide Disaster Restoration Inc.; and
Shane Bies from the Oakland County
Health Division. Their presentations
were followed by a flurry of questions.
Attendees also could apply for financial
assistance on the spot.
Federation, the Jewish Federations
of North America, the Jewish Women's
Foundation and other philanthropic insti-
tutions and individuals have committed
funds to JFS to help community members

recover.
Significant dollars have been set aside
through Federation's Jewish Assistance
Network (JAN). Call (248) 592-2650 to
apply for funds and to be connected to
other agencies that can help.
Federation recently received a $100,000
out-of-state donation that was added
directly to the grant money distributed
through JFS.
To make a donation, make checks
payable to "Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit — Disaster Relief."
JAN grants are available to many
low- and moderate-income households
affected by flooding, but some income
and eligibility limits apply. Call JAN to
determine eligibility.
Hebrew Free Loan has new, special
interest-free loans for those who ineligible
for grants. The Detroit Chessed Project in
Oak Park is collecting in-kind donations
and looking for volunteers. Go to www.
DetroitChessed.org . To donate goods or
items, call (248) 221-1894. Also, they are
seeking commercial contacts willing to
donate or sell at large discounts large bulk
items as well.
