Temple Israel No. 2 team members display their trophy.
Steve Stein
Contributing Writer
A
team from Temple Israel won
the Inter-Congregational Men's
Club Summer Softball League
championship for the second straight sea-
son.
Last year, it was Temple Israel No. 1.
This year, it was Temple Israel No. 2. For
both, it was their first league title.
"We've been in the league for about
15 years. I don't think we made it to
the semifinals before this season:' said
Temple Israel No. 2 player-manager David
Rubenstein. "This was our year. I don't
want to boast, but I really felt we had the
best team in the league
Rubenstein said talent plus camaraderie
was Temple Israel No. 2's recipe for success.
"We all like each other. A lot of the guys
had family members on the team, and that
added to the closeness," he said. "Ifs what
brotherhood is all about"
Temple Israel No. 2 tied for second place
in the 12-team league during the regular
season with an 11-3-1 record and earned
the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
It beat two playoff surprises Aug. 17
in the semifinals and championship
game at Community Sports Park in West
Bloomfield, the league's home each Sunday
from late May through mid-August.
After knocking off Congregation Shaarey
Zedek 19-9 in the semifinals, Temple Israel
No. 2 defeated Adat Shalom Synagogue No.
2 by a score of 7-1 in the title game.
Adat Shalom No. 2 beat Temple Shir
Shalom 7-4 in the semifinals. Shir Shalom,
a 10-time league champion, defeated
Shaarey Zedek 12-8 in the third-place
game.
Shaarey Zedek entered the playoffs as
the No. 10 seed after going 3-12 during the
regular season. Adat Shalom No. 2 was the
No. 8 seed after a 6-9 regular season.
Here's Temple Israel No. 2's roster: David
Rubenstein, Mike Rubenstein, Bernard
Rubenstein, Victor Uzansky, Ben Uzansky,
Jon Frolich, David Witten, Jeff Katzen,
Kenny Walters, Stan Feldman, Eli Cooper,
Greg Robbins, Scott Chismody and Steve
Safrin.
Temple Israel No. 1 didn't successfully
defend its championship, but its 12-3
record was the best in the league during
the regular season.
Chuck Freedman, one of the league's
coordinators, said it was a great summer
on the softball diamonds, filled with close
games and laughter.
"People are competitive, of course, but
we want the league to be fun:' Freedman
said. "We want it to be like a bunch
of friends getting together to play on
Sundays."
There were close to 200 friends playing
softball this season. Each of the 12 teams
had between a dozen and 15 players.
"We could have a few more teams next
season:' Freedman said.
Howard Meyers and Gary Klinger
Fore!
The B'nai B'rith golf league's second season
is in the books.
Team and individual champions were
crowned this month after 13 weeks of
nine-hole match-play competition and 16
weeks of play overall.
Gary Klinger and Howard Meyers won
the team title with 148 points. They were
followed by Mitch Lefton and Stu Zorn
(142); Joe Starr and Dale Taub (139); Dave
Riger and Marc Ruskin (132); Al DiPaolo
and David Lubin (128); Mike Klinger and
Kerry Chaben (119); Howard Genser and
Lyle Schaefer (116); and Eliot Globerson
and Steve Lotzoff (109).
Taub won the individual title with 72
points followed by Gary Klinger (70.5),
Zorn (68), DiPaolo (67.5), Lefton (67),
Meyers (66), Ruskin (66), Starr (66),
Schaefer (65.5), Chaben (65), Lubin (63.5),
Lotzoff (60), Riger (60), Genser (58.5),
Mike Klinger (56.5) and Globerson (53).
The league grew a bit this season. There
were six teams (12 players) last year and
eight teams (16 players) this year.
Klinger, the league founder and organiz-
er, said he feels a move from Fox Hills Golf
& Banquet Center in Plymouth to the more
centrally located Links of Novi helped.
"We're going back to the Links of Novi
next year, and we'd like to have the maxi-
mum 10 teams (20 players):' he said.
