• LAKES URGENT CARE
or When your health concerns can't wait.
My son is signing up for a sport this year. Does he need a separate sports physical?
If your son or daughter is participating in an organized sport they will need a sports physical. This can be done during your child's regular physical
exam or separately, but the sports physical is not a substitute for an annual physical. A sports physical incorporates additional questions into the
exam to screen for sports related concerns such as injuries, concussions and other health problems that could be dangerous for an athlete.
What kind of medical information do I need to provide for a sports physical?
If your child is participating in high school sports during the 2014-15 school year, the Michigan High School Athletic Association requires that he or
she receive a sports physical after April 15, 2014. High school athletes must submit a sports physical exam form before they can participate in any
school-sanctioned sport. These forms typically need to be updated every year.
A growing number of qualified urgent care facilities, including Lakes Urgent Care, provide comprehensive pre-participation sports exams.
How often should my child have a complete physical examination?
Routine physical exams are recommended every one to two years for all school aged children. Depending upon your child's health, they may
require additional annual physicals and frequent follow-ups in the office for things like asthma management. It is important to remember that a
team sport, camp or school physical is NOT a substitute for a complete annual physical exam given by a pediatrician or family practitioner.
What questions should I ask a doctor to make sure that my child is in good physical and mental condition?
One of the greatest benefits of completing a sports or annual physical exam is that they both provide opportunities for
the health practitioner to screen for problems that may otherwise go undetected. If you notice that your child is making
frequent complaints, such as headaches, visual symptoms, fatigue, excessive thirst, joint or muscle aches, these may be
signs of underlying issues that may require further attention. Discuss these concerns with the doctor. It is also important to
share your family medical history of diabetes or heart related issues, as these conditions can be genetic and can affect other
family members.
