obituaries Obituaries from page 77 A League of His Own M ilton F. Goldman, 82, of Novi, died Aug. 11, 2014. "Milt" was born in Detroit on Aug.14, 1931. He had a difficult childhood with a mother who was institutionalized in Eloise for 15 years and a father who worked long hours as a butcher. His older sisters and aunts provided much of his guidance and needs. Despite his troubled youth, he developed a strong sense of self, ethics and courage. He joined the Army in the early 1950s and at a party in uniform, met Rochelle Davidoff, his future wife. They married on June 20, 1954, and during 60 years of marriage, gave each other a deep sense of love and support and three children: Arnie, Leslie and Kenny. In 1956, Milt was fortunate to work for Joe Falk of Hardware Sales and Supply Company, a security hardware distributor, and soon became Joe's right-hand man. Joe became a second father, friend and mentor to Milt. When Joe unexpectedly died in 1974, Milt ran the operations and, in 1977, became part-owner of the company. As president of Hardware Sales, his passion, hard work and drive to succeed helped grow the company into a flour- ishing multistate distributor. In 1994, Milt retired, passing the baton to his son, Arnie. Milt lived through great tragedy in his life, including the loss of his mother SALLY FARBER, 95, of Schaumburg, Ill., died Aug. 15, 2014. Then, on a hot summer night in 1982, on the way home from a Detroit Tigers game, his Chevy Citation was struck by another car, which ended the life of his youngest son, after midnight on July 21, 1982, only seven months after Kenny's bar mitzvah. Milt's spirit survived the pain of his injuries, guilt and devastating agony of loss. He and Rochelle held onto life, becoming part of a bereavement group, deciding they needed to preserve the legacy of Kenny. Mort Plotnik of the Jewish Community Center, where daughter Leslie worked, suggested Milt Goldman a way to preserve Kenny's legacy. In Memory Of Kenny Because of Kenny's love of all types of sports, especially basketball, Mort thought it would be a fitting tribute to start a fund that would "encourage and help young people to participate in sports." Milt and Rochelle loved the idea and endowed the JCC with an athletic fund for the Kenny Goldman Memorial Basketball League for young boys and girls. Thirty years later, the Kenny Goldman league has become one of the most successful programs at the JCC. Interment was held at Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale.
