0 my one golfer represented
Detroit at the 2012 JCC
Maccabi Games. There were
no golfers from Detroit in 2013.
This year, with Detroit hosting the
2014 JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest,
is an entirely different story.
Eighteen golfers are teeing it up for
Detroit this week including 12-year-
old Mikaela Schulz, the only girl com-
peting in the sport. She's a first cousin
of LPGA professional Morgan Pressel.
Of the 17 Detroit boys playing golf,
12 are 14U athletes and five are 16U
athletes.
The group includes Alex Relle
(16U), a member of the Michigan
High School Athletic Association
Division 2 state champion Bloomfield
Hills Kingswood-Cranbrook boys golf
team; Zack Felsenfeld (14U), junior
club champion at Tam-O-Shanter
Country Club; and Joey Wolberg
(14U), son of three-time Franklin
Hills Country Club club champion
Lyle Wolberg.
The most obvious reason for the
surge in Detroit Maccabi golfers was
the opportunity to play at home —
which made recruiting easier for
coach Kevin Taylor — but there were
other factors.
"Because we're the host city and
golf is an individual sport, 12-year-
old's can compete for us (along with
the usual athletes ages 13-16):' said
Taylor, a first-time Maccabi coach
and father of Jacob Taylor (16U), who
was the lone Detroit Maccabi golfer
in 2012.
Jacob Taylor played his first com-
petitive rounds of golf at the 2012
Maccabi Games in Rockland County,
N.Y. He didn't have a coach with him,
and he had just seven clubs in his
bag.
This spring, he was one of the top
golfers on the West Bloomfield High
School junior varsity boys golf team.
There were no tryouts to make the
Detroit Maccabi golf team. Everyone
who wanted to play is playing 54
holes this week at three of the area's

top courses.
Practice began in mid-June after
school ended and continued until last
week. Besides playing one practice
round at each of the three Maccabi
courses, Detroit golfers had an oppor-
tunity to play several other tough area
courses.
Maccabi golfers competed Monday
at Knollwood Country Club in West
Bloomfield and Wednesday at Franklin
Hills in Farmington Hills. They're
playing Thursday at Tam-O-Shanter in
West Bloomfield.
"These are all tough courses with
fast greens:' Kevin Taylor said. "And
Franklin Hills has a lot of bunkers,
including British-style pot bunkers
with steep walls!'
The first two rounds featured indi-
vidual competition. For Thurday's final
round, golfers from different delega-
tions are paired in two-player, best-
ball, Ryder-Cup style competition.
Golfers also have competed in daily
longest drive and closest-to-the-pin
contests.
With no golf scheduled Tuesday,
Detroit golfers planned to participate
in Maccabi activities and watch other
sports events.
Taylor said last week he thought
his golfers would do quite well, espe-
cially because they're familiar with
the nuances of the Maccabi courses
through not just practice this summer,
but playing and caddying there.
The other Detroit Maccabi golfers
are Josh Cohen (14U), Matthew Cohen
(14U), Noah Goodman (14U), Alex
Gold (14U), Noah Kahan (14U), Justin
Krommer (16U), Zach Kollin (16U),
Mitchell Labe (14U), Corey Lipton
(16U), Jonah Lusky (14U), Isaac Mintz
(14U), Jack Walt (14U) and Dylan
Wittenberg (14U).
Wayne Lusky is the team's assistant
coach. The Detroit Maccabi golf com-
missioner is J.J. Modell.
Kevin Taylor has an impressive golf
resume. He's a two-time club cham-
pionship flight champion at Tam-0-
Shanter. ❑
