the best of ever thin High-Five For 5th Tavern! New bistro brims with excitement - and pleased palates. I t took more than 15 months to begin work on the former Mountain Jack's location in Bloomfield Township ... and the complete gutting from wall to wall for their own restaurant. But the huge transformation to 5th Tavern on Telegraph Road, just north of Square Lake Road, in a prime location across from Costco, seems to already have the makings of an eatery well worth the wait. Where did that name come from? ... It is the fifth restaurant by co-owner George Lukaj and the largest of his five dining spots. George and his co-partners at 5th Tavern, brothers Jerry and Luis Sanchez, are see- ing familiar faces and returning customers since it opened on May 14. The freestanding building's interior cer- tainly has been changed ... The standard look of a Mountain Jack's has been trans- formed into a modernistic warm and com- fortable setting ... with light-brown tones intermingled with black and rust decor appointments, stone-covered posts, etc. The new 5th Tavern has a large and heav- ily stocked bar with 16 stools and choice bottles of select corkage. Its dining room seats 250 on normal days and around 350 on weekends ... with the back banquet room opened to accommo- date the added crowd ... And island tables for two, four, six and eight are strewn about the restaurant. Seven-day hours are Monday- Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-mid- night; Sunday,11 a.m.-10 p.m., and an all-you-can-eat brunch, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The menu will greatly satisfy diners, with eight salads, 11 appetizers, six burgers, eight fea- tured sandwiches (steak, grilled veggies, barbecued chicken, etc.) ... USDA Angus beef steaks (filet, New York Strip, ribeye, Steak Diane, etc.) ... plus rack-cut lamb chops. Seafood and other choices include sea- food linguine, jumbo shrimp scampi, four chicken dishes, baby back ribs, braised lamb shank, etc. The Jewish star that dangles from the neck of our waitress, Rachael Hauck, daugh- ter of localites Robin Greer and Robert Hauck, shone brightly with her continuous smile ... and graceful efficiency. In the short time it has been open, 5th Tavern has already been given high marks by enthusiastic and returning customers. DANDY DINING DEAL ... Six home- made potato pierogies (stuffed with pota- toes, grilled onions, etc.) ... includes soup or salad and sour cream or applesauce ... $6.95 ... 10 days only ... "My friend Linda Wasche and I recently went to La Dolce Vita on Woodward in Detroit, a gem whose unassuming appear- ance is not, but the food is. No pretention with gaudy front, simply letters marking LDV on the front. "My all-time favorite dish there is the Gnocchi a la Bava. The home- made potato dumplings are soft and light. These potato pillows are George Lucaj, Jerry Sanchez and Luis Sanchez served drowning in a six-cheese OPEN 24 HOURS Tasty and Healthy Breakfast, Lunch and Dinners Kornemadt Sans D4111# Chicken Stir Fry 5 9.99 ULL's a Moral OF SOUTHFIELD 10 0/ 43 Senio Citize n Disco tint f Delicious Full Course Dinners featuring: Homemade Meatloaf '9.49 Homemade Turkey $9.99 Grilled Chicken Breast '9.99 On 12 Mile Rd. "Linda opted for the Penne Norma but with angel hair pasta substitution. The mari- nara on it sparingly sauced the pasta and the roasted eggplant sprinkled throughout was lightly grilled. A hefty spoon- ful of ricotta added a creamy texture to the dish. "We ended the meal with a surprisingly delicious chocolate dessert, surprising because it was called a brownie with chocolate sauce that was more like a flourless chocolate cake or a lava cake. To our delight, the center oozed with chocolate, a perfect finale for La Dolce Vita's show-stopping dinner." GIGI'S KORNER ... "My human father is typing this for me so excuse all his errors. Us dogs don't have to sit at home when their human parents or other folks go to Sunrise Cafe on Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills for lunch or breakfast. All the outside tables get a container of fresh water (and maybe a treat or two) if you bring us. "And thanks to Michael Glazer, groomer at PetSmart in West Bloomfield, for giv- ing us some good looks when we go. His human parents, Mr. Manny and Mrs. Sandy Glazer, must be mighty proud of him. Maybe Michael fixes Mr. and Mrs. Glazer's hair and makes them look good, too:' LOX AT A DUNKIN' DONUTS? ... Sure, the kosher location on Greenfield in Oak Park ...
