Hugh Greenberg's Maccabi Service I read with interest Contributing Editor Robert Sklar's Essay "Mr. Maccabi" (Aug. 14, page 40) about Jay Robinson and his contribution to the Detroit JCC Maccabi Youth Games. It certainly was a well- deserved tribute. I believe, however, that you should also acknowledge and give kudos to another Detroiter who played a major role in the creation of the JCC Maccabi Youth Games — my husband, Hugh Greenberg. Hugh served as an officer of the Jewish Welfare Board, the national body over- seeing all the Jewish Community Centers in the U.S. and Canada. It was there that the concept of international youth games was developed and instituted. Hugh was the first commissioner of the Games, traveling around the country (Chicago, Baltimore, etc.), and in each community he met with the leadership and was the flag bearer or the one to toss out the first ball on Opening Day. Naturally, when the Games were slated for Detroit, he was intimately involved with Jay, Mort Plotnick (executive direc- tor of the JCC at that time) and the rest of the Detroit leadership. Hugh often said his involvement with the Maccabi Youth Games was one of the most gratifying contributions he person- ally made in his many years of service to the Jewish community. Hugh passed away last October. Our family is pleased to be supporting the 2014 Detroit Maccabi Games in his memory. If a home seller always wants to get the highest possible price and a buyer always wants to pay less, just how effective can one agent be when they represent parties on opposite sides of the same transaction? Answer: They can't. At least not without betraying some of your trust. Especially when the agent who represents both buyer and seller in a transaction usually stands to double the commission they take home from the closing table. In real estate speak its fondly known as double-gipping. In legal terms it's called dual agency. In some states it's even been outlawed. But don't take our word for it.
