'Cruise & Schmooze'

Jewish Historical Society river event includes
Prohibition re-enactors.

t was smooth sailing as more
than 200 guests joined the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan July
23 for Cruise & Schmooze: A Detroit
River Cruise. Over cocktails and a tasty
spread of small plates prepared by Steve
& Rocky's of Novi, guests met and inter-
acted with re-enactors who portrayed
characters from the Prohibition era.
The 1920s and early 1930s were
not only the time of gangsters and
flappers, but also were one of the
most important periods of growth
in Detroit's Jewish history. These
were the years in which many of our

community's Jewish congregations,
communities and institutions were
established. Although the characters
they portrayed were fictional, the re-
enactors shared historic information
based on true events.
As the Diamond Belle boat traveled
along the Detroit River, the captain
of the boat provided a guided tour
of many of the riverfront's beautiful
landmarks and buildings. And, true
to its mission, the Jewish Historical
Society provided additional narration
that helped to mark and celebrate
Michigan's fantastic Jewish history.
