Grand Opening from page 18

lives of the Munich 11, who were cap-
tured and killed during the 1972 Munich
Olympic Games. Eleven members of the
delegation stood on stage, each speaking
of one of the 11 victims, and how they
plan to honor their lives with kindness
during this coming week. Following
their words, each speaker hung a small
torch on a lit-up portion of the stage.
Josh Goldberg, 16, of Farmington
Hills is competing in his fourth Maccabi
Games for the 16U Blue baseball team.
He was one of the speakers.
"It was an honor to represent the city
of Detroit and the Detroit JCC as the
opening ceremonies were in Detroit for
my fourth and final year," Goldberg said.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,
and it means a lot to me to partake in an
experience like that:'
The ceremonies also included a per-
formance by Jewish recording artist Josh
Nelson and an invocation given by Rabbi
Tzvi Muller of Partners in Torah.
Three different oaths, one for the
athletes, another for the volunteers and
one for the parents and spectators were
also recited — each one pertaining to
respecting the rules of Rachmanus, com-
passion.

The night ended with the lighting of
the torch. JCC President Florine Mark
spoke to the participants prior to the
lighting.
All of you out there are now equipped
with everything you need to start the
JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest," Mark
said.
"With kindness, the magic word, this
week you will compete, create and per-
form to the best of your abilities, and
you will do it with the 4,000 people that
are sitting around you here tonight and
the whole community:'

Florine Mark speaks at the event.

The 11 torch-bearers then came to the
stage and placed the mini-torches from
the Munich ceremony onto the torch,
immediately filling the theater with the
light of a spinning disco ball and bright
lights, a glowing spectacle.
"Have an amazing week:' Mark said.
"Be safe, be kind and let the games
begin!"
