month-long conflict with Hamas:
Missile shield: The superb
performance of Iron Dome, the protective
system that shot down nearly every Hamas
rocket threatening life or property, has
major military implications for Israel and
the world.

Tunneling behind
enemy lines is hardly
a new tactic; historically, it has had success,
as in the 1917 Battle of Messines, when
British mines killed 10,000 German soldiers.
The Israel Defense Forces knew of Hamas'
tunnels before hostilities began on July 8 but
failed to appreciate their numbers, length,

hen Matthew Williams, a doctoral candidate
in education and Jewish studies at Stanford
University, wanted to know the most afford-
able communities for a committed Jewish family, he
looked only at communities meeting five criteria: those
that have a mikvah and an eruv; a Reform, Conservative
and Orthodox synagogue; K-12 Jewish day school
options; and at least one kosher restaurant or kosher-
friendly supermarket.
His top choice: Detroit.
On April 29, Williams released his study on 50
American communities and their affordability for com-
mitted Jewish families. "Not only was Detroit the most
affordable on the list:' Williams said, "but also the run-
ner-up is almost twice as expensive
"Is the Motor City ripe for a Jewish revival?" he asked.
It appears so. Several committed Jewish families have
already figured out that Metro Detroit is a good place to
raise Jewish families Over the past few years, dozens of
