obituaries Sinai Surgeon r. Stuart Hamburger, 90, of Franklin, died Aug. 7, 2014. He was a graduate of Central High School in Detroit. He then attended Wayne state University School of Medicine, Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and Georgetown University in D.C. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Having enlisted in World War II, Dr. Hamburger served as a combat engineer and in the Medical Corps. He became a captain in the Medical Corps and chief of surgery at the U.S. Army Hospital in Germany, which led to his receipt of a letter of commendation from the U.S. Army in 1956. Dr. Stuart Dr. Hamburger served an internship at Jefferson Memorial and a residency in surgery and pathology at Alexander Blain Hospital in Detroit, which was affiliated with the University of Michigan. His academic appointments included being an anatomy instructor at the University of Michigan medical school and a clinical professor at the U-M College of Medicine, Department of Surgery. He taught at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, where he was program director, residency, gen- eral surgery from 1982-1991. In addition, he served as a consultant in surgery at Sinai, chairman of the depart- ment of surgery, medical director of the operating room and was on the Finance Committee of the board of directors. His many professional memberships included the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, of which he was a founding member, the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Michigan Thyroid Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Hamburger wrote and co- authored many articles for professional journals. Among these contributions are to the Sinai Hospital Bulletin, the Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal and the New York State Journal of Medicine. Presentations were made to several groups, including Wayne State University School of Medicine annual workshops, the American College of surgeons, annual meetings of the American Medical Association, the American Thyroid Association and the International College of Surgeons Western Hemisphere Congress. Dr. Hamburger is sur- vived by his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Hamburger; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Harry Hamburger and Claudia Hamburger; daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Rob Starkman; grandchildren, Jordan Hamburger, Joshua Hamburger, Dr. Brandon Shallop and fiancee, Rachel Kay, Devin Shallop, Charlie Starkman and Meredith Starkman; sister-in-law, Hilda Hamburger; many nieces, nephews; his caregivers, Jannye, Regina, Kim, Dionne, Lana and Mary. He was the devoted son of the late Isadore and the late Henrietta Hamburger; the loving brother of the late Dr. Joel Hamburger and the late Helen Kanagur; the dear brother-in-law of the late Dr. Raymond Kanagur, the late Sidney Grobman and the late Samuel Grobman.
