Climate Change Models
Don't Weigh All Factors
Regarding "Straight Facts On Climate
Change" (Aug. 7, page 33), I will address
what I can in this short letter. With all
due respect to Mr. Paul Gross, he is a
noted meteorologist, not a physicist with
expertise in radiation transfer, which
is critical for understanding climate
change.
Meteorological models are power-
ful in predicting weather (not climate)
because they accurately model fluid
dynamics. They do not claim to accu-
rately model all the thermodynamic and
solar phenomena that I had mentioned
in my article and that are required to
model climate.
Many climate models can be con-
structed to fit past data — basically
called curve fitting. To be meaningful,
a climate theory and/or model must be
based upon making accurate predic-
tions. Because models accurately fit past
data does not mean they can provide
accurate predictions.
As I stated, the major greenhouse
gas is water vapor, the major reflecting
component is clouds, and the primary
driving function is the sun. The pres-
ently used models are deficient in those
regards.
Also, two decades ago, I was involved
in a major Department of Energy pro-
gram to measure global temperature
using sampling stations. Those data
were very unreliable as a measure of
global temperature because of the loca-
tion of the sensors and the interpreta-
tion thereof. Using sniffing pepper as an
analogy to prove a point about radiative
transfer is not worthy of comment.
Finally, I stand with world-famous
physicist Freeman Dyson in my opinion
of present model-based climate predic-
tions.

More Effort Needed To
Show Support For Israel
I attended the gathering outside the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield that was reported in this
past edition of the Jewish News (Aug.
7, page 17).
Frankly, I found it somewhat
embarrassing and rather a waste of
time. I attended with several friends,
one of whom has children and grand-
children living in Israel, and we all
left early. The gathering — a more
accurate term than rally — was small,
ineffective and was put together on a
piecemeal, last-minute basis.
Where are our defense organiza-
tions — the ADL, American Jewish
Committee and others? While Israelis
really are facing dire threats, and
other Jewish communities have put
together impressive community-wide
demonstrations, we in Detroit have
satisfied ourselves with the Shaarey
Zedek event (impressive, but basically
in our own community only), and the
ad hoc gathering outside the JCC.
I'm surprised and a little disap-
pointed. If I were in Israel I would
yawn in the 30 seconds that it was
taking me to reach a safe room.

Kalamazoo Temple
Gets Full-Time Rabbi
Reform Judaism is alive and well in
Kalamazoo. I know this because on
Aug. 3, I was proud and honored
to attend the installation of Temple
B'nai Israel's full-time rabbi, Matthew
Zerwekh.
Since I relocated to Kalamazoo
from Bloomfield Hills more than a
year and a half ago after marrying my
husband, Joel, I was hoping to find a
Reform congregation that would help
me feel connected to my new com-

Get Ready To Brag!
N
ational Grandparents Day is Sunday, Sept. 7. To celebrate, the
Jewish News will run its "Grandparents' Brag Book" in the Sept.
4 issue.
To participate, send in a photo of your grandchild (with name, age and
place of residence) along with a cute or funny comment he or she made to
jheadapohl@renmedia.us with "Grandkids" in the subject line by Aug. 28.
Photos should be high-resolution (jpgs 500K or larger).

munity. I'm happy to say that I have
found that at TBI.
Temple B'nai Israel was founded in
1866 by 20 Jewish families who had
emigrated from Germany and were
dedicated to Reform Judaism. Today,
TBI is Greater Kalamazoo's spiritual
home for Reform Judaism. It is an
inclusive, diverse and welcoming
community where members engage
in worship, lifelong learning, celebra-
tion and gathering. Every experience
I have had at TBI has been a posi-
tive one and the members have been
warm, friendly and eager to get to
know me.
Through the dedication and vision
of its wonderful leadership and mem-
bers, we were able this year to raise
and secure funds making it possible
to hire a full-time rabbi, the first
time since the late 1960s. That to me
speaks volumes. Any time you are in
Kalamazoo, stop by and see us. You
will be welcomed with open arms, just
as 1 was.

Teen Mission's Return
Was Correct Decision
Gratitude goes out to the Jewish

above all other objectives by shorten-

The devastating effects left by the

Thank you to all of the leadership

at was easy. Let's try
nother one. If you have
30,000 of Credit Card debt
at 20% interest, how much interest
will you pay per year on the debt? The
Answer is $6,000. If you are in a 30%
tax bracket, do you know how much
you need to make to pay your taxes
and net $6,000 to pay the taxes? The
Answer is $8,571. If you are making
$85,710 per year, do you know much
of your income you are wasting on
the interest? The Answer is 10%. Next
Question - If you have credit card
debt like this, do you know what you
should do? The Answer is YOU NEED
TO TAKE ACTION to get rid of the
debt, so the $8,571 goes to pre-tax
retirement savings instead. If you earn
7% on your money in an IRA or 401(k),
do you know how much the $8,571
will be in 15 years? The Answer is
$226,405. If you would rather have the
$226,405 then pay the credit card debt,
do you know what to do? The Answer
- Call Thav Gross - we do many things
- but there is nothing better than what
we do with credit card debt!
