I t's been a difficult month witness- ing the scope of Hamas' expanding arsenal, the sophistication of its terror tunnel network and the pathetic anti-Semitic reaction to Israel's defensive response by the United Nations and far too many other high- profile personalities. Our daughter, son-in- law and grandson live in Givatayim — which bor- ders Tel Aviv — and that makes it personal. Throughout this period, I find myself transfixed watching CNN and trying to control my outrage at the coverage. While there are moments of candor in support of Israel, the constant civil- ian body count coverage coupled with graphic images of wounded children and grieving parents is a disservice to presenting the issues in a fair man- ner. It's no surprise — blood and gore attract viewers, which means ratings and money. Sure, I could watch Fox and feel bet- ter, but a key principle stops me. There are times when a client is being pursued by the government for taxes or creditors seeking payment. The client often says to me, "There is a certified letter for me at the post office, what should I do?" The clients think if they don't pick up the papers, then they will not have been served, so maybe they should ignore them. My answer is always the same. I tell the client, "Don't hide, pick up the papers, read them and send to me:' I explain, "If someone is shooting bullets at you, you need to know who it is and where they're coming from so you can defend against it:' Applying this principle to our plight against increasing anti-Semitism com- pels me to watch CNN so that I gain a sense of world opinion. While the trend is certainly disturbing, we must know what is coming at us in order to be able to respond. As a baby boomer that was distanced from the Holocaust, until recently I did not believe it was possible for the world to ever revisit such insanity. The recent actions of the U.N. Human Rights Council, in accusing Israel of war crimes for its defense of attack on its citizens while ignoring the docu- mented genocide by Syria of its own citizens and numerous other atrocities tells us that the insanity is here. • Is it the news media or social media that is con- trolling public opinion? My answer is the two are inextricably entwined via Facebook and Twitter. Posts always incorporate links to videos and articles generated by the news media. There are unlimited resources to post in support of any position taken. If you look at my Facebook page the last month, you'd see several posts from the Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer, including his terrific video interviews on CNN and other media articulating the rightfulness of Israel's position. The problem, however, is that if you were to come across the Facebook page of a pro-Hamas, anti-Jew, crazed lunatic (yes, by definition they must be) or a Palestinian sympathizer who, while meaning well, has all of his facts twisted, you would only see posts in support of their position — and the posts would be bolstered by videos and articles from what appear to be cred- ible news sources. Jews only comprise .2 percent of the world population, about 13.75 million people as of September 2012, accord- ing to thejewishpress.com. As of the start of this year, there are presently 1.23 billion Facebook monthly active users. This means there are a lot more Facebook pages advocating anti-Sem- itism and anti-Israel positions than pro-Israel support. Bottom line: We need to keep our eyes open so we can see what is coming at us. ❑ Ken Gross is an attorney with Thav Gross and host of the Financial Crisis Talk Center show (soon to be "Law and Reality") that airs weekly at 9 a.m. Saturdays on WDFN 1130 AM, "The Fan," and 11 a.m. Sundays on MyTV20.
