Wires from page 30

Who's Doing The Work?
Ohel Moed members arrange for
maintenance and checking of the West
Bloomfield eruv and Bais Chabad
takes care of its own connecting eruv,
both making sure there are no breaks,
fallen trees or damaged areas that
would make them unusable.
In addition to volunteer checks,
Fridman said, "The outer loop of
the West Bloomfield eruv is done
by Mesivta boys on bicycle, with a
donation made to the school for their
work:'
Both Ohel Moed and Bais Chabad
ask those who use their areas of the
eruv to contribute to the funding.
Cost of the West Bloomfield eruv
repair project was $3,527 for materi-
als and wages. The estimated running
cost is $1,600: $1,200 to pay those who
check the eruv and $400 for materials.
Members from B'nai Israel and Keter
Torah also have donated.
"We check the eruv weekly to make
sure the complete system is intact"
said Howard Storchan, chairman of the
WBEC. "This includes checking that
utility workers and landscape crews
have not changed or damaged the
poles and wires of the eruv. The major
source of damage is weather."
Even with the major overhaul, occa-
sional additional repairs are warrant-
ed, often taken care of by volunteers.
"Howard Storchan does a good por-
tion of the repairs along with me"
Fridman said. "I joke that we are
the `eruv SWAT team:" When neces-
sary, professionals are hired to make
repairs.

Tying Community Together
"The benefit of the eruv is that it
unifies the West Bloomfield Sabbath-
observing community" Storchan
said. "It allows us to carry within the
confines of the eruv. This includes car-
rying babies and small children. It also
allows handicapped individuals to use
canes, walkers, wheelchairs. We can
now carry items between each other's
homes, synagogues and parks"
For some, including parents of
young children who rely on the use of
a stroller when the eruv is up, its dis-
repair affects much of Shabbat. "When
the eruv was down this past winter,
my four children [ages 3-8] and I were
stuck in our home all Shabbat" said
Ohel Moed member Lisa Hoory. "We
weren't able to go to shul [with hus-
band, David] or even go to anyone for
a meal. It was a hard winter.
"We were very fortunate that just
as the weather began to improve, the
eruv was restored. The kids and I have
been to shul every week and getting
together with friends on Saturdays.
We are very appreciative to all those

Moses Fridman, with WBEC volunteer
Hartley Harris and Howard Storchan

involved that helped to make sure the
eruv is up and maintained"
Dan Mendelson, past treasurer of
the WBEC, looks at the project's suc-
cess as just one more draw to the West
Bloomfield Jewish community. "Given
our reinvigorated eruv, together with
our Bnei Akiva family [Israeli repre-
sentatives providing religious Zionist
education and programs for Jewish
youth,
uth their families and communi-
ties] and youth programming, West
Bloomfield has a lot to offer young
families seeking a comfortable and
vibrant community in which to raise
their children"
Fridman said he sees the West
Bloomfield eruv as a wonder-
ful example of different streams of
Judaism working together. "It is also
an example of public utilities and busi-
ness owners cooperating with a Jewish
community" he said.
"DTE donated the time of an electri-
cian and his bucket truck many days
to repair broken lechis high up and
also to install new lechis on poles that
needed them. AT&T donated a large,
valuable amount of tree trimming to
help fix the Walnut Lake leg. Without
AT&T and DTE donating thousands of
dollars' worth of labor, we would not
have an eruv"
Nearly 400 individuals use the
combined West Bloomfield and Bais
Chabad eruv on a regular basis.
"When I was growing up in the
Bronx in the 1950s and 1960s, there
was no eruv" Silberberg said. "This
prevented my mother and younger
siblings from going to shul on Shabbos
and visiting friends. The eruv is a
community builder in that it allows
mothers and fathers to wheel their
children to shul and join friends for
Shabbos dinner creating a cohesive
community.
"It's hard to imagine our lovely com-
munity developing without it:'
