ednesday, July 23, marked
the closing celebration of
Rick May's All Star Camp, a
four-day-a-week summertime program
providing people 16 and older with spe-
cial needs a friendly and safe environ-
ment to continue their emotional, physi-
cal and educational growth.
Founded in 1993 by the late Rick May,
the camp meets at Lamphere Center,
part of Page Middle School in Madison
Heights. May, a musician and special
education teacher for more than 30 years,
started the six-week camp with the vision
of providing developmentally challenged
individuals with something fulfilling to do
under the direction of trained staff.
"Rick wanted a place where special
needs teens and adults could go dur-
ing the summer to socialize and have
fun:' said Joyce, his wife of 47 years. A
psychologist, she explained the campers
all have special needs, with diagnoses
ranging from severe autism to Down's
syndrome to other forms of cognitive
and physical impairments. Campers are
Jewish and non-Jewish alike.

ing dance and music at the school; on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, the partici-
pants are treated to field trips, such as
going to the zoo, the beach, bowling or
to the movies.
"There are also special guests brought
in," Joyce said, "including music thera-
pists, certified exercise instructors, puppe-
teers, and even an equestrian with a horse
for the campers to interact with:'
The camp used to get approximately 40
campers per session, but due to funding
cuts this year, there were only 13 campers.
Nancy Rodriguez, Lamphere Schools'
paraprofessional and site director
for the camp for more than 20 years,
recalled how she got involved.
"I knew Rick through school, and one
day he asked me if I wanted to work
with him during the summer, and I said
yes," she said.
During this year's open house, campers
displayed their artwork and performed
music and skits for the audience.
Art specialist Michael Phillips, who
has also been involved with the camp for
some 20 years, is a retired art educator
and longtime friend of the Mays. In addi-
tion to their common bond of member-
ship at Troy's Congregation Shir Tikvah, it
was the teaching connection that fostered
Phillips' interest in the camp.
"Rick asked me to teach at camp," he
said, "When I became a regular staff
member, I talked Rick into having an
end-of-camp art exhibit, and that's
become my favorite part:'
According to Rodriguez, "It's a great
feeling to make the participants happy,
and to see how much fun they have. We
can see the 'Wow!' on their faces from
this experience, and that means a lot to
everyone:'
Joyce added, "Rick, who was named
a Jewish News Mitzvah Hero some
years ago, believed in tikkun olam, and
this belief lives on even after his death
through this wonderful camp he cre-
ated:'
