You Spend Your Time and
Hard Earned Money to Keep Your Backyard
Looking Nice,You Deserve to Enjoy it
Central High School, another stop on the
bus tour.
"We used to hang out at a drug store
on Dexter and Richton called Danny's;
Marsha Proghovnick recalled. "There was
a jukebox there, and we used to listen to
music, drink fountain drinks and dance.
Sometimes we would hang out at night
and sing. We thought we were a singing
group"
Participants did break into a singalong
of 1950s tunes during the four-hour jour-
ney, arranged with the help of Linda Yellin
of the sightseeing company Feet on the
Street Tours. The group also stopped at
Eastern Market for lunch. Later, there was
birthday cake, dinner and a slideshow of
photos through the years.
"What stood out for me was the close-
ness and history they all share said
Hilary Gringorten. hadn't been to most
of these locations before. We [the kids]
have heard stories throughout our lives
of this place and that place, but actually
going there and seeing it and hearing
them retell their stories and memories
brought it all to life
Generation To Generation
The group of families passed on their love
for one another to their children, who
also became best friends. Now, many of
them are raising children of their own
and keeping the tradition alive through
another generation.
"We've just created this family out of
four families that has been an unbreak-
able bond; Tracey Edelstein explained.
The "kids" who threw the party (which

home with his son, Ross, and
daughter, Leah.
took several months to plan) include
Tracey, Ross and Adam Niskar, Ronna
Yelin, Joey and Mark Kodlowski, Hilary
Gringorten, Josh Kristal and Lisa Smith.
Several out-of- town guests flew in for the
occasion.
"We are a very special family because
we choose to be together always; said
Francie Kodlowski. "Now this has passed
on to another generation. This was a won-
derful tribute to their parents, and it will
live in our hearts forever:"
For Joanne Kristal, taking the journey
together was especially meaningful.
"We seriously lived like a group back
then," she explained. "We kind of had free
rein. It was a carefree time in our lives:'
Arlene Niskar grew up on Cortland
and Dexter in Detroit until age 14. She
describes the bus trip as a rollercoaster of
emotions.
"My home still looks basically the
way it was when we moved in 1959:' she
said. "But, when we were driving down
Richton toward Dexter all I could see
were cars but no buildings. The blight just
broke my heart:'
Still, she says she loved every minute of
the 70th birthday bus tour. It also made a
lasting impression on her son, Ross.
"It was emotional, but there were lots of
smiles and laughter:' he said. "The experi-
ence was enlightening and it gave us a
real sense of what the community looked
like at that time. My mom told me the
tour was one of the best days of her life.
She was overcome with happiness that
she could share these memories with her
children. The fact that it made our parents
so happy made it a very special day for all
of us:'
