JN

n Sunday, Aug. 24, more
than 200 Metro Detroiters,
their friends and family will
ride the streets of Detroit to explore
many of the city's most exciting spots
and neighborhoods and learn about
the Jewish history of those areas
from the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan.
J-Cycle is a bicycle tour designed to
celebrate the developments happening
in and around Detroit and to explore
the city's Jewish history in an up-close
way. The event highlights the contri-
butions of Jewish leaders — both past
and present — who have added to the
community's rich Jewish culture and
history.
This year's 22-mile route features
six docent-narrated stops. From the
starting point of Milliken State Park,
located along the Detroit River, riders
will travel to Belle Isle to see the fabu-
lous aquarium, then to the verdant
Elmwood Cemetery. The route travels
north and west to include a visit to the
historic Albert Kahn-designed Temple
Beth El building in the Boston-Edison
district of the city, the all-new Chabad
House near Wayne State University,
Detroit's own Hitsville USA (Motown
museum) and the Chase Building in
bustling Campus Martius. At the con-
clusion of the ride, participants will be
treated to a lunch in the park.
J-Cycle has a mission to bring
people together for a healthy activity
that allows them to learn and cel-
ebrate Detroit's Jewish history. Now
in its fourth year, previous rides have
explored other areas of the city, includ-
ing the Eastern Market, the Downtown
Synagogue and the Reconstructionist
Congregation of Detroit. In 2012, the
ride traveled west to Clark Park, home
of the Summer in the City House; and

Risha Ring and Carol Lipsitt tell the
history of Ahavas Achim during last
year's tour.

in 2013, the route shifted to the north
exploring northwest Detroit.
Each year, the event has sold out.
This year, organizers have made addi-
tional spaces available but another sell-
out is expected.
J-Cycle is presented by the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan,
Reconstructionist Congregation
of Detroit, Isaac Agree Downtown
Synagogue and Hillel of Metro
Detroit. Sponsors include Weight
Watchers, MJS Packaging, Goodman
Acker PC., Culligan Water Systems,
Pegasus Entertainment, the Hub and
Wheelhouse Detroit.
Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday,
Aug. 24 at Milliken State Park in
Detroit. Advanced registration is
required and is just $30 ($25 for stu-
dents). To register, or for more infor-
mation, go to www.michjewishhistory.
org or call (248) 432-5517.
