With Israelis traumatized from running
to and from shelters, ORT's operational
arm in Israel, World ORT Kadima Mada,
has responded to the emergency situa-
tion, providing educational and recre-
ational activities for children in shelters
and a respite for families in some of the
worst-affected communities.
Families from the south of Israel are
the first of some 2,000 people for whom
ORT is providing respite at the youth
village of Hodayot. Nearby, educational
programs have been organized at Mada
Park, World ORT's science, educational,
cultural and sports campus in Kiryat
Yam.
Also, educational and recreation
activities are being provided in public
shelters for children in Kiryat Gat and
Dimona. Special enrichment classes in
science and technology, including robot-
ics, have been adapted for the unusual
circumstances.
Similar enrichment activities for chil-
dren in the south will continue through-
out the summer. ORT will provide these
programs in Arab, Druze and Jewish
areas.
Children play in the Kiryat Gat
ORT center.
"ORT is always dedicated to providing
exceptional educational programming
throughout the world, but during this
time of crisis in Israel, ensuring the
safety of our Israeli students and their
families is of the utmost importance
said Andi and Larry Wolfe of Bloomfield
Hills, longtime ORT supporters.
"ORT has always reacted quickly in
times of need, and the Michigan Region
of ORT America will do whatever we
can to ensure our Israeli students will be
protected even when there are serious
disruptions."
The Israeli and local governments
have asked ORT to increase the numbers
of young people in the programs expo-
nentially. Funds are urgently needed.
The most effective way to give is through
ORT's partnership with the Jewish
Federations of North America (JFNA).
To donate through the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, go

to ORT Kadima Mada in Israel, contact
Nicole E. Miller, ORT Michigan Regional
Director, at (248) 723-8860, or by email
at nmiller@ORTamerica.org.

as a professor at Eastern Michigan
University. Years after he left Best, he
told a former student that he felt some
board members resented the "Jewish
influence" on the school. (Street was not
Jewish.)
But Street's successor, the German-
born Joe Mathesius, did not funda-
mentally change the school's direc-
tion. He loved music and often dropped
in on classes, playing folk songs on his
guitar.
Many Best grads went on to play in
high school and college orchestras; clari-
net player Larry Liberson now plays with
the Detroit Symphony.
Other Best grads include journalist
Bill Schmidt, former deputy managing
editor of the New York Times; physi-
cian Sam Broder, former director of the
National Cancer Institute; and Judy Hu, a
former top executive at General Electric.
Together Again
The reunion begins with a meet-and-
greet at CJ's Upper Deck in Waterford on
Saturday, Aug. 16, the evening of Dream
Cruise. After the Sunday afternoon gath-
ering at Farina's, some participants will
head to 24220 Rosewood — now John E
Kennedy elementary — to take pictures.

Chai regrets she won't be among the
celebrants. "The intimate, caring atmo-
sphere at Best was very comparable to
the atmosphere here on our kibbutz;
she said via email. However, she may
be there in more than spirit; former
classmates are hoping to Skype her at
