life c Iles (At 14 Mile Rd. in the Broadway Plaza) (248) 855-1730 Farmington Hills, Michigan www.greis.com T he Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington Hills presents a book talk and lecture titled "Righteous of Poland" featur- ing Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn and national columnist Bill Tammeus at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. Approximately 90 percent of Poland's 3 3 million Jews were mur- dered in the Holocaust. Among the survivors were brothers Zygie and the late Sol Allweiss, who eventually set- tled in the Detroit area. Cukierkorn and Tammeus tell the brothers' story in their book They Were Just People: Stories of Rescue in Poland During the Holocaust. In addition to the Allweiss brothers' story, the book chronicles nearly two dozen other accounts of how Jews in Poland survived the Shoah with non-Jewish help. Cukierkorn is the spiritual leader of Temple Israel of Greater Kansas City. Tammeus is a columnist for the Presbyterian Outlook and the National Catholic Reporter. "The Allweiss brothers' story of sur- larCMEMMIRM EMIMMMWM WI:PLID CSSIII1 Righteous Gentiles' Rescue Of Two Local Jews To Be Discussed At HMC Zygie and Sol Allweiss, c. 2000 vival is yet another testament to the human spirit, and an example of the righteousness of others to help their fellow man," said Holocaust Memorial Center Executive Director Stephen M. Goldman. "We are honored to have Rabbi Cukierkorn and Mr. Tammeus at our museum to share this and the other stories of survival and hope that came out of this very dark period in Poland's history" Tickets are $5 (HMC members are free) and docent credit is available.
