ick Birndorf says he still can't
believe what he witnessed.
He watched his uncle,
89-year-old Jarvis Franzblau, shoot his
age July 9 at the difficult Heathlands
golf course in the Western Michigan
village of Onekama.
Franzblau, a passionate golfer for 60
years, will turn 90 on Oct. 14.
"The hand of God was guiding
Jarvis during the round," Birndorf said.
"That was the best I've seen him play
in 10 or 15 years.
"He shot in the high 80s when he
was in his 70s, and he's been shoot-
ing between 95 and 105 in his 80s. In
fact, he shot 105 (July 8) at Manistee
National [Golf Course and Resort]."
Birndorf said he thinks an amateur
shooting his age is the most difficult
golf milestone to achieve.
"Think about it," the Interlochen
resident said. "Bogey golf is 90, which
is a good score for any amateur. Few
people in their 80s can swing a golf
club, let alone play 18 holes of bogey
golf. To shoot your age is extraordi-
nary unless you're a pro or at one time
you were a scratch golfer:'
So what was the difference on the
day Franzblau shot 89? His driving was
solid as always, Birndorf said, but his
chipping and putting, "which have let
him down as he's gotten older," didn't
betray him.
"He had two long putts lip out,"
Birndorf said. "He usually loses five or
six golf balls during a round on that
course. He didn't lose a single ball dur-
ing this round. The whole day was an
extraordinary experience, something
he may never do again.
"He didn't have any `gimmie' putts;
he shot every ball as it lay, and he
counted every stroke:'

Birndorf was in a group of six — he
was paired with Bob Faber and his
uncle — that started on the treacher-
ous back nine because a league was
getting ready to tee off.

A Great Start
Franzblau shot 44 on the back nine,
including a spectacular bogey on the
par-5 18th hole that Birndorf calls the
most difficult hole in Manistee County.
"I figured Jarvis would card his
usual 9 on No. 18 and the first eight
holes would be for naught," Birndorf
said. "Instead, he got a 6. I had a 7."
Birndorf thought about telling his
uncle he had a chance to shoot his age,
but he changed his mind.
"I didn't say one word," he said.
After eight holes on the front nine,
Birndorf silently added his uncle's
score.
"He was at 41. He had to par the last
hole to shoot 89," he said. "I debated
whether to tell him the situation or
just let it be. I decided to leave it to the
golf gods:'
Birndorf said his uncle hit the drive
of a lifetime on No. 9, a 230-yard rock-
et to the edge of the green. He shot par
and got his 89.
"It was only then that I told him
what he had accomplished," Birndorf
said. "Bob and I signed his scorecard
and attested the score was accurate:'
Franzblau, a lifelong Michigan resi-
dent who now lives in Manistee, was
a farmer in his younger days and an
agribusiness titan. He's a World War II
veteran who flew many missions over
Europe as a navigator between 1943
and 1945.
"My uncle is a great example of the
`Greatest Generation' who still has a
great golf swing," said Bill Birndorf of
West Bloomfield, another nephew. ❑
