frontlines Literary Giants That Never Made It F or every great book written, there are many that just did not make the grade. Did you ever wonder about those whose 15 minutes of fame proved ever elusive? Of course you did, and I am now going to set your wondering minds at rest. Here are some book descriptions and short critical reactions. Any similarity to known works and authors is purely purposeful. The Big White Fish by Hershel Velville. The captain of a small fishing boat leaves a New England harbor in search of the catch that will make him famous as a purveyor of the best gefilte fish in the East. Criticism: The plot never had enough of a hook. Tiny Ladies by Lisa Miriam Alkorn. Portrayed is the life of an impoverished rabbi's six daughters and their struggle to find happiness in the "modern" world. Criticism: Overly contrived and sweet. Story of Two Shtetels by Chaim Dockstein. Here is a look at life under the czar and glimpses of resistance fighters. Criticism: It would have been a far, far better thing if this had not been written. Asa In Waldoland by Levi Karolsky. A young Jewish boy falls asleep at Pesach seder and dreams of trying to find Waldo amid a cast of curious characters like the Angry Tailor who gives a strange seder of his own. Criticism: Too much dependence on far-fetched, imaginary beings like the smiling, yet often disappear- ing Yorkshire Dog. For Whom The Doorbell Rings by Ernst Hefferman. This is a look at freedom fighters in the "war to end all wars:' The interplay of characters and the vivid battle scenes keep the story moving. Criticism: Easily forgotten in light of modern movies. ❑ JEWISHNEW% LETIDI TO THE EDITOR: WALLACH A MAN 01 OOCOpy Wall Street POSted or November, 2011 Parlor Detroitefs 'WOOD Y.. Tv. fonner 4,1.^01. An evil photographer manages to steal people's goodness through his camera lens and he destroys his loved ones in the process. Criticism: The mys- tery wears thin quickly with so much dependence on hand-held phones out- distancing his evil proclivities. The Gripes of Roth by Jonah Steinmetz. We follow the tribulations of a family as it goes to the Goldeneh Medinah (the Golden Land) seeking to better its plight. Criticism: It's been done so many times already. If you missed any of these, you may not want to wait for the movie. Options have not been picked up for obvious reasons. Oh, well, there are still many classics left to read at your local Buns & Knubble. Times are from Yeshiva Beth Yehudah calendar. Cover page design: Michelle Sheridan. Grigory Yezersky says he "arrived in the U.S. with two suitcases and $90 in my pocket." Relatives and Jewish social services helped him settle in Los Angeles, find a place to live, learn to drive and find work. Years later, the innovation consultant moved to Michigan to work for an automotive company, settled down and established his family here. Not long ago, Grigory decided to start his own company. He landed a contract with a large corporation for consultation and collaboration with branch offices on opposite coasts. This required travel, hotels, rental cars and presentation materials. "They gave me a purchase order, and that, and our agreement, spelled out when I would be paid, but it would take months for that payment to work its way through their system. In the meantime, I had expenses, a promise of future payments but no money." A friend suggested Grigory call Hebrew Free Loan, and remembering the help he received when he came to the U.S., Grigory did. "I needed the money right away, and they helped me in a very short time," Grigory said. "I wasn't desti- tute. What I needed was to bridge a gap, but they saved me. As a result, this phase of my project is about to finish, and the money has been repaid. This is a great organization that is here to help, no matter the circumstance." Become an HFL Donor. Call.
