Full-Service With A Legacy Of Caring
ne hundred years ago,
in 1914, Dr. Steven
Grekin's great-uncle
opened the family's first medi-
cal office in Detroit, begin-
ning a family legacy that has
included seven Grekin derma-
tologists — to date the largest
number of dermatologists of
any family in the world.
"It's been 100 years of my
family caring for your family's
skin," says Dr. Steven Grekin,
a board-certified dermatolo-
gist and founder/CEO of the
Grekin Skin Institute (GSI), with
locations in five Metro Detroit
cities, including Franklin Der-
matology and Surgery Center in
Southfield, making it one of the
nation's largest dermatology
practices.
"It's not just longevity, but
also our philosophy of caring
that has been handed down
from generation to genera-
tion," he says.
Grekin Skin Institute was
founded on a simple principle:
to provide patients with an
outstanding clinical experi-
ence based upon delivering
superb customer service and
leading-edge treatment for any
skin condition, including acne,
skin cancer, eczema, psoriasis,
growths, aging skin and more.
At Franklin Dermatology, comprehen-
sive service includes top-notch medical,
surgical and cosmetic treatments by highly
trained professionals who are guided
by the Grekin philosophy of delivering
compassionate care. This service-oriented
approach has been a key to the company's
success.
Each morning, staff members at Franklin
Dermatology hold a meeting that's part
education and part preparedness for the
day ahead. They follow Dr. Grekin's phi-
losophies on patient-centered care that are
outlined in his book, Grekin Skin Institute
DNA, and a book he recenity read, Patients
Come Second.
"It's very, very unique in terms of a
business philosophy," Dr. Grekin says. "The
name of the book raises the staff's hackles,
but I believe if you don't care about your
employees and don't empower them and
educate them, you can't provide cutting-
edge care to patients. We go to great
lengths to educate our staff.
"The reason the Institute is different
is that we take all the different pieces
and combine them to deliver individual
treatment that utilizes cutting-edge treat-
ments," he says. For example, soon Frank-
lin Dermatology will have a MOHS surgery
suite for in-office skin biopsies.
"We also do clinical research for FDA
clinical trials to help develop new drugs
Dr. Bruner
Dr. Shumer
and new procedures, Dr., Grekin says.
"Once approved, we are already familiar
and highly skilled at delivering them. These
might include cosmetic studies on lip fill-
ers or pharmaceuticals for treating acnes,
psoriasis and skin cancer. We are at the
forefront."
Franklin Dermatology also uses products
designed to enhance and protect your skin
that are developed by Grekin Laboratories.
"Over the last 21 years, we've developed
several skin care products and treatments
unique to the Institute that are not offered
anywhere else," Dr. Grekin said. The prod-
ucts include an effective acne regimen,
treatments to rejuvenate aging skin as well
as scar repair cream, eye creams, cleansers
and gels.
Dr. Grekin completed his undergraduate
studies at the University of Michigan in
gerontology and his medical degree from
Des Moines University. He studied under
world leaders in dermatology and geron-
tology, and was a lead researcher at the
International Skin Rejuvenation Institute in
Paris and Quebec. He and his family live in
Bloomfield Hills and are longtime members
of Temple Israel.
In 2012, Dr. Grekin launched the
Institute's Bedside Dermatology division,
which brings comfortable, compassionate
dermatologic care directly to the patient's
bedside at 58 nursing home and assisted
living facilities across Metro Detroit.
Franklin Dermatology and Surgery
Adam Gomoll
Tracy St. Germain
Center now embodies the
Jan. 1 merger of the Grekin
Skin Institute and the practice
of Dr. Seven Shumer, a board
certified dermatologist who
has been serving patients in
Southfield for 31 years.
Dr. Shumer received his
medical
degree from the Uni-
Dr. Rubin
versity of Michigan Medical
School, and did his intern-
ship at William Beaumont
Hospital in Royal Oak, where
he served as chairman of the
dermatology department
1995 to 2011.
"As I am looking to work
less in the future, I am happy
there are excellent derma-
tologists in the office to help
accommodate the needs of
patients. I have a long his-
tory here and I've enjoyed
practicing in this area," says
+GM_ Dr. Shumer, who lives in
Farmington Hills and belongs
to Temple Israel.
Although the Grekin
Skin Institute has 20 expert
providers overall, several are
based at Franklin Dermatol-
ogy, where they are accepting
new patients.
Dr. Michelle Bruner, a
young mother married to
a physician, is comfortable
seeing young children and has a special
interest in women's dermatological health
as well as cancer prevention, screening and
treatment. She has lectured on dermatol-
ogy topics nationally and is published in
multiple medical journals.
Dr. Cory Rubin will join the practice
Aug. 1, after he finishes his specialized
dermatology residency at the University of
Michigan. He also has training in head and
neck surgery.
"I'm excited to join a group of estab-
lished dermatologists in our community
and add my knowledge and skill to the
group," he says. "I look forward to taking
care of my patients."
Rounding out the professional staff are
experienced physician assistant Adam
Gomoll and nurse practioner Tracy St.
Germain.
Medical innovation, including fresh
perspectives from excellent new doctors,
is key to maintaining a competitive edge
combined with compassionate patient care
at Franklin Dermatology.
