base in the Hodayot Youth Village,
the "seminarniks" finally trav-
eled safely to their home base in
Jerusalem on July 15. In fact, a parent
conference call to update us on the
matzav (situation) started just as the
IDF launched its ground offensive
into Gaza.
But life goes on. I have taken the
cue from my Israeli friends who
endure this daily threat to keep
moving on through routine and
simple distractions. If my Israeli
psychologist friend, an olah from
New York, can help spread calm by
teaching yoga to women in a bomb
shelter in Sderot, I, too, will try to
find zen on my mat. I work in my
garden and take walks.
Even as the bombs fall and the
inevitability that she may spend
some time this summer in a
bomb shelter is very real, I have
no regrets that my daughter is in
Israel. I will not deny the danger or
my worry. I know that this time in
Israel will be a transformative one
for her that can only strengthen her
understanding of what it means to
be a Jew and never take our Jewish
homeland for granted.

Jolie Gittleman received a prayer book
to use during her trip.

When midnight here rolls around,
my mind is already seven hours
ahead wondering what the dawning
day on the other side of the planet
will hold for Israel. If you, too, have a
loved one in Israel and find yourself
up in the middle of the night, I'm
sleepless right there with you.

he first-annual Planet Lori
Art Camp will be held at the
Birmingham Bloomfield Art
Center (BBAC) from Aug. 25-29. The
camp is in honor of Lori Buckfire, who
passed away from ovarian cancer four
years ago at age 41.
"We wanted to do something to honor
her memory and also do something
positive said her husband, Dan Buckfire
of Bloomfield Township.
The camp is open to children ages
5-15 who have had a parent or close rela-
tive diagnosed with cancer.
"The camp is for kids who are touched
by cancer; ifs not for kids who have had
cancer themselves:' explained Lori's sis-
ter Lisa Elconin.
Lori's love of doing art with her son,
Hayden, inspired Elconin to create the
camp.
Art has been very helpful for Hayden,
who has been attending the BBAC since
age 5, Buckfire explained. The camp has
already gained support from multiple
organizations, including Kids Kicking
Cancer and the Ronald McDonald
House.
Students at the camp will be split into
three age groups: lower elementary

upper elementary, and middle and high
school. All students will learn art skills at
the daily camp including drawing, paint-
ing, print making, mixed media and
sculpture. The middle and high school
students will also have an opportunity to
work with metals and jewelry.
Each student who attends the camp
will earn a full-paid scholarship provided
by the Lori Haber Buckfire Foundation.
The foundation was set up in honor of
Lori and has been funded by fundraisers
and the selling of Dan's book The Best of

Times.
The camp is planning to accept 50 stu-
dents on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications are due Aug. 28, but spots
are filling up fast — currently about 25
students are signed up.
Elconin and Buckfire hope that stu-
dents find the healing that Hayden found
through art and the positive attitude that
Lori constantly portrayed.
As Elconin explains, "Lori was an
optimist. She made the best of every-
thing:"
