sports '4. • •• 1111111MI alms Seymo Beloved Bowler Remembered Steve Stein I Contributing Writer T he Downtown Fox B'nai B'rith Bowling League has lost its "god- father:' Seymour Zate, who bowled in the league for more than 60 years and worked tire- lessly to keep it alive, died July 5 at age 81. The league's team championship trophy is named for Zate, who presented it at this year's post-season banquet. "He's the league's godfather — he's the reason why the league is still here and why I stepped up a couple years ago to keep it going; said league president Justin Kaplan, Zate's cousin. "He always said if everyone in the league recruited one new bowler each year, the league would be fine:' Nearly 60 bowlers, one of the biggest turnouts in years, participated in the league last season at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills. The 14 teams who com- peted during the first half were the most of any area B'nai B'rith league, according to Kaplan. Kaplan said there's talk of starting a scholarship fund or B'nai B'rith bowl- ing tournament in Zate's honor, but the Downtown Fox league's name won't be changed. "That's not something Sy would want:' he said. Zate received a lifetime achievement award this spring from the Metropolitan Detroit B'nai B'rith Bowling Association. A moment of silence will be held before B'nai B'rith league play begins in September, Kaplan said, and pins will be knocked down to signify a last rack. Bowlers interested in competing in the Downtown Fox league can contact Kaplan at (248) 672-0818 or justin-kaplan @comcast.net. Jewish Heritage Day The Detroit Tigers will celebrate Jewish Heritage Day — and the 80th anniversary of Hank Greenberg leading them to the 1934 American League pennant — dur- ing a game Sunday, Sept. 14, against the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park. Each special ticket includes an upper box infield or upper reserve seat for the 1:08 p.m. game, a limited edition mini- Hank Greenberg Hall of Fame plaque and a $1 or $2 donation to the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation (depending on the price of the seat). Greenberg was the first Jewish player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1956. For information on Jewish Heritage Day or to buy 15 or more tickets, con- tact Michelle Fields at (313) 471-2221 or michelle.fields@detroittitgers.com. Tickets also can be purchased on the Tigers' web- site, detroit.tigers.mlb.com . David Blatt, the foundation's executive director, said the Tigers have been a long- time supporter of the foundation, which annually presents the Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Classic and Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet. ORDER DELI TRAYS FOR SUMMER CELEBRATIONS!! Siegetto Deti at Jewish All-American Western Michigan University pitcher Gabe Berman was named a Division I First Team All-American baseball player for the second straight year by the Jewish Sports Review. The Bloomfield Hills Andover High School graduate is one of 14 players who made the First Team. Six are pitchers and three are repeat selections. Berman went 1-3 with nine saves and a 2.62 ERA in his recently completed sopho- more season. He led the Broncos with 23 appearances, working 341 /3 innings as the team's closer. The hard-throwing right-hander had 41 strikeouts, held opposing batters to a .231 batting average and didn't allow a home run. His nine saves were the third-most in a season for a WMU pitcher, and his 23 appearances rank fourth in team history. Berman has 14 saves in two seasons with the Broncos. He's already just two shy of the team career record. Berman struck out four of the six batters he faced in his final save of the spring, which came in a 7-4 win over defending Mid-Illini Conference cham- pion Bowling Green in the MAC tourna- ment. The loss eliminated Bowling Green from the tourney. ❑ Please send sports news to 3426 E. West Maple Rd. at Haggerty Rd.
