Building Leaders
National speakers train Tamarack Camps' summer staff
T
amarack Camps, a recipient of
an inaugural grant from the
Applebaum Family Compass Fund,
was able to create the Applebaum Family
Staff Excellence Series for its summer staff
members. The series, four presentations
by nationally renowned speakers, provided
enhanced pre-camp training for Camp Maas'
300-plus counselors, supervisors and special-
ists.
Staff members participated in three differ-
ent programs while those in the Junior Staff
Program had a training specifically crafted
to their needs. The goal of the series was to
produce camp leaders who:
• Understand that camp is about creating
opportunities to build life skills
• Are inclusive and can create a safe, digni-
fied environment for every child
• Are excellent role models
• Demonstrate the traits of a successful
leader
• Can make challenging choices about
respect and integrity
• Can influence, lead and persuade others
in a positive way.
Camp Speakers
Supervisor of team service staff Tomer
Moked and music supervisor Ben
Goutkovitch
The speakers were entertaining and pas-
sionate as they offered hands-on tools and
examples for everyday use to foster communi-
ty building and life skill development. Rebecca
Barnett, a counselor in Robinson Pioneer
Village, said, "I was given actual ideas of what
to do with my campers. In the past, much of
pre-camp was about ideas, not practical sug-
gestions of how to work with campers:'
Director of Camp Maas Lee Trepeck, said,
"The Applebaum Staff Excellence Series
raised the bar for staff training at Tamarack
Camps. For that the entire community is
grateful:'
