Smile! I Dr. Anil Kumar Dentists to offer free dental care Aug. 2. FOR U.S. CONGRESS DEMOCRAT Michigan I 11TH DISTRI Fighting for— Drs. Vejayan Krishnan, Aaron Ruskin, William Ruskin and Sarah Kuo Michael Higer JN Intern W ith dental care becom- ing tougher and tougher to afford, the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of Michigan have partnered with Dentistry from the Heart for a unique opportunity. For one day, Saturday, Aug. 2, the oral surgery center, located in Farmington Hills, will offer free dental care to the community. The members of the practice include Drs. William and Aaron Ruskin, father and son Jewish dentists, along with Drs. Vejayan Krishnan and Sarah Kuo. Patients, who must be 18 or older, have their choice Dr. Aaron of receiving a fill- Ruskin ing, extraction or cleaning. Although the event is directed toward helping those who cannot afford to receive dental care elsewhere, Aaron Ruskin explains that there will be no pre- screening. "Anybody is allowed to come in and get free dental care that day:' Ruskin said. "At the end of their procedure they will also receive a list of dental homes — places low-income patients can go for low-cost dental care, including the Jewish Dental Clinic:' Dentistry from the Heart has pro- vided free dental care to low-income patients worldwide, but this is the first event it has held in Farmington Hills. Other doctors in the practice have participated in similar pro- grams and decided that it would be a great way for their own center to provide for struggling community members. "There are a lot of these programs that pop up throughout the state of Michigan, so we just felt like this was a good thing to do and we want- ed to provide our own avenue for it," Ruskin said. Ruskin, a member of the Jewish Dental Clinic, said he wanted to be able to help community members firsthand, rather than from the back- ground. "I'm involved in the Michigan Dental Association, and there is a big access-to-care issue that's con- stantly discussed and debated in the political scheme, and I wanted to be able to have some sort of access-to- care control right here in this office and be hands on as opposed to just debating it around a house of del- egates in Lansing." Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the event runs through 5 p.m. Patients are advised to arrive early, as they will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. The line to be seen may be outside, so it is recom- mended to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring chairs, blankets, snacks, etc. The first 200 patients to arrive are guaranteed to be seen. Volunteers are needed for regis- tration and working with people in line. ❑ Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of Michigan is located at 32905 W 12 Mile Road, Suite 200, Farmington Hills, MI 48334.
