he Detroit Jewish News was hon-
ored Tuesday, June 24, by New
Detroit, receiving its Closing the
Gap Corporate Award.
New Detroit's mission is "to work as
the coalition of Detroit area leadership
addressing the issue of race relations by
positively impacting issues and policies
that ensure economic and social equity."
The Jewish News was chosen for "its
ongoing commitment to maintain-
ing relationships with communities of
color through collaborations with the
Chaldean-Jewish Building Community
Initiative and the Black-Jewish Forum,
both aimed at improving the quality of
life in Southeastern Michigan"
In accepting the award, IN Publisher
and Executive Editor Arthur Horwitz
thanked Chaldean News Co-Publisher
Martin Manna and Michigan Chronicle
Senior Editor Bankole Thompson for
their invaluable roles in shaping the
Chaldean-Jewish and Black-Jewish ini-
tiatives.
"A vibrant, resurgent Detroit Jewish
community will not take place in a vacu-
um. It requires a city and region that are
also on the rebound, and a level of col-
laboration that underscores our shared
destiny:' Horwitz said.
"Since its creation in the aftermath
of the 1967 disturbances, New Detroit
has worked relentlessly to close the gap
in race relations in our region. Some
of the Detroit Jewish community's
most esteemed leaders, including Max
Fisher, Alan E. Schwartz and Stanley
Winkelman, were instrumental in its
founding. We as a Jewish community are

awards dinner, which took place at the
MGM Grand in Detroit Awards were
presented by Shirley R. Stancato, New
Detroit President and CEO, and William
S. Taubman, New Detroit Chairman and

Other honorees included the Coalition
on Temporary Shelter, Enrico "Rico"
Razo, a youth advocate in Southwest
Detroit, and PR veteran Bob Berg.
