AUGUST 17-22, 2014

Friends Forever

Lasting friendships are made at
JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest.

Sari M. Cicurel
Special to the Jewish News

W

e have filled this special
column with everything
you need to know to be a
Maccabi athlete, artist, volunteer and
home hospitality family. But why would
you take time out of your busy week?
Just in case you missed the why — by
being involved in the JCC Maccabi
Games & ArtsFest you are participating
in the world's largest annual event for
Jewish youth. Who knows? You might
just find yourself years down the road
living on a college campus with your
Maccabi teammates.

The roommates: Jared Kohlenberg (second from right) Yale Williams (third from

left) and Seth Goldman (far left) at Michigan Stadium.

In the summer of 2010, Jared
Kohlenberg decided to take part in his
third Maccabi Games on the basketball
team. His first experience had been on
the Detroit home court in 2008 followed
by San Antonio in 2009.
"I had enjoyed myself too much to
pass up another opportunity. I also
understood this was the closest I would
ever get to becoming an Olympic
athlete, and that I probably couldn't
challenge LeBron James for a spot on
the men's national team:' Kohlenberg
said. "I made a lot of friends through
the Maccabi games with teammates
Seth Goldman, Yale Williams, Jeremy
Fishman and Omer Oppenheim."
In Denver they received a silver medal

and ended up playing the semi-final
game with just four players for almost
three-quarters of the game.
"That game, to this day, is still one of
the most competitive and intense games
I have ever been a part of in my life:' he
said.
Fast-forward three years, Jared and his
teammates are still the closest of friends.
Williams and Goldman are now room-
mates with Kohlenberg at the University
of Michigan along with Alex Vieder, Ryan
Stern and Richey Capriccioso. Playing
together and competing together brought
them together as great friends.
"The Maccabi Games were more than
just a competition for me; they were a

place to connect with other Jews from
across the country and across the world,
and to represent my city and state,"
Kohlenberg said.
Kohlenberg still keeps in touch with
many Maccabi athletes from around the
country. "For Yale, Seth and I; we are
able to recount memories of the Denver
Maccabi Games and to appreciate how
the team we played on four years ago now
brings us together as roommates at the
University of Michigan:'
