>> around town JVS Strictly Business Networking event honors inspirational leaders, entrepreneurs. A record-setting crowd of 830 business and community leaders attended JVS' 17th annual Strictly Business Networking and Awards Luncheon on June 12 at The Henry hotel in Dearborn. The event raised more than $318,000 to support JVS programs and services. Mark Fields, COO of Ford Motor Company, headlined the event, serving as honorary chair and keynote speaker. Event-goers also heard from Jacques Panis, president of Shinola, the recipient of the JVS 2014 Business Leadership Award and Max Surnow, co-founder of Cooper Street Cookies, who was presented with the JVS 2014 Rising Entrepreneur Award. The event also highlighted three individuals who overcame personal and professional challenges to become exemplary employees includ- ing Jeffrey Siegel of Birmingham. JVS recognized their success stories with Employee of the Year Awards. Siegel was honored for re-inventing himself when his family-owned drug store closed due to the economic downturn in 2008. Golf Invitational Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation holds its annual fundraiser. T he Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation held its 24th Annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational at Franklin Hills Country Club on June 9. Tony La Russa, special assis- tant to the commissioner of Major League Baseball, received the Hank Greenberg Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Steve Greenberg, who was on hand to honor the courage and accomplish- ments of his father, Hank. Pulitzer Prize winner, sports columnist and features writer for the New York Times for 26 years Ira Berkow received the Dick Schaap Award for Media Excellence. Former Detroiter Jonny Imerman, can- cer survivor and Founder of Imerman Angels, a nonprofit organiza- tion that connects a cancer fighter or caregiver with someone who has fought and survived the same cancer, received the Barry Bremen Memorial Inspiration Award. The 24th Annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational is the major fundraiser of the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. Since its inception in 1984, the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation has raised more than $1 million to help fight cancer.
