McDonald says, As part of our
effort to encourage new players, we
offer two games for beginners with a
free half-hour lesson before each game
and three games for novice players
also proceeded by a free half-hour. We
also offer a monthly mentor/mentee
game in which players ranked as Life
Masters or higher volunteer to play
with beginners and novices:'
Retired dentist Willie Winokur of
West Bloomfield and a bridge direc-
tor says, "It's difficult explaining the
fascination we duplicate players have
spending three hours in a game try-
ing to solve bridge problems. Figuring
out how to describe a hand to your
partner with a vocabulary of only 15
words and then determining the logi-
cal solution to play the hand requires
thoughtful efforts:'
"I recall an incident years ago at
the Metropolitan Bridge Club in Oak
Park when a kitchen fire started in
the restaurant next door and smoke
came pouring into the bridge club.
The firemen tried to get the players to
exit quickly, but a few refused to leave
until they finished the hands they
were playing. Total immersion:'
Marty Hirschman, 64, of
Southfield, a top Michigan player,
is editor of Table Talk, the official
publication of the Michigan Bridge
Association. He taught his two sons to
play bridge, resulting in Sam earning
his Life Master in 1988 at age 11 and
Dan earning his in 1994 at age 10.
"Dan's record stood for 10 years,
but today 71 is the national average
age for a bridge player:' Hirschman
says. "Bridge isn't attracting younger
people because there's so much com-
peting entertainment. We're hoping
that the many incentives for new
players offered by the Connection
will increase the number of younger
people playing here:'
Jonathan Fleischman, 26, a
Southfield attorney, is working to
earn his license for teaching bridge.
He won a national event with the
U-M bridge team and continues to
compete with his teammates.
"The Bridge Connection offers a
good environment, where people
know how to behave well and the
directors do a good job of keeping
the games going:' he says. "I always
feel I'm among friends when I play
bridge. I can have a terrible game, but
still have a good time with the other
players:'
Janet Abramson-Borson, 86, of
West Bloomfield says, "Bridge is my
therapy. I play three or four times a
week at the Connection and forget
the world around me when I'm play-
ing. The game is challenging, and the
people I play with are my extended
family:'
When there were no computers,
TVs, cars or telephones, people came
together to shmooze and play card
games. Bridge is a game that is part
science and math played strategically
with multiple tactics and melded
together with the camaraderie.
The players at the Bridge
Connection are doing their best to
expose others to the challenges and
enjoyment of bridge and to keep the
game alive.
