A Friend And Partner

M

ichael J. George, a revered
leader of the Chaldean
American community and
a legendary businessman in Metro
Detroit, died June 24, 2014, at age 81.
"Mike George's passing is a signifi-
cant loss — not only for the Chaldean
community that he helped nurture and
shape here and around the country —
but also a loss to others
he built friendships with,
in particular, the Jewish
community:' said Arthur
Horwitz, publisher and
executive editor of the

Detroit Jewish News.

"From the time that
Mike started building
his business here, many
people in the Jewish com- Mike Georg
munity were supporters,
friends and partners in his initiatives:'
Mike George and his brother
Sharkey built Melody Farms Dairy
from a single milk-truck route to a
multi-million-dollar corporation that
eventually acquired Sealtest, Twin
Pines and Wilson dairies among oth-
ers and was sold 11 years ago.
After the July 1967 riots, Mr.
George encouraged Chaldean grocery
and party store owners to remain in
Detroit, helping them rebuild their
locations and open additional stores.
Over the course of 30 years, he helped
finance more than 700 businesses.
Gov. Rick Snyder said Mr. George
had a "great impact" on the revitaliza-
tion of Detroit.
One project with the Jewish commu-
nity he was involved in was the Building
Community Initiative created in 2010
by the Jewish News and Chaldean News,
both based in Southfield. The project
facilitated understanding between the
two once-immigrant communities and
included joint initiatives in arts, educa-
tion and business.
"The Chaldean-Jewish Building
Community Initiative would not have
achieved the success that it has with-
out Mike George agreeing to serve as
one of our honorary co-chairs," said
Horwitz.
"When Mike George was involved

JOEL BODZIN, 78,
of Oak Park, died
June 24, 2014.
An Army veteran,
Mr. Bodzin had been
stationed in Paris.
He is survived by

Helen Bodzin; sons
and daughters-in-
law, Robert and Conni Ring of China

with something, it lent instant cred-
ibility to the initiative because of the
high regard in which he was held:"

Helping Others

Mr. George was born in Detroit in 1932,
graduated Catholic Central High School
and started the one-truck dairy busi-
ness with his father, Tom, and brother
in 1950. He served in the
U.S. Army during the
Korean War from 1953-
1955, then rejoined the
family business.
Besides spearheading
the legendary growth
of Melody Farms Dairy,
he was one of the driv-
ing forces behind the
formation of the Bank of
Michigan, which focused
on small business lending. His atten-
tion was focused on helping others. He
was considered a second father, uncle
and adviser to countless others in the
community.
Gerald Rosen, chief judge of the U.S.
District Court in Detroit, called Mr.
George "a treasure of our community"
who "has long been an important
mentor to many men and women in
our great community, and his leader-
ship, wisdom and generous heart have
endeared him to people of all faiths
and backgrounds:'
Said Horwitz, "We in the Jewish
community who have known Mike
and his family were enriched by our
cooperative experiences and we look
to others inside and outside of the
Chaldean community continuing his
work and continuing to be inspired by
what he was able to achieve.
"Truly, Mike personified the
American dream — for the benefit of
us all:'
Michael George is survived by his
wife of 54 years, Najat; six sons and
three daughters-in-law; and older
brother, Sharkey, and wife, Rita.
