An artist with an adventurous spirit,

Aaron Poris was about to graduate

from college with a teaching degree,
but wasn't content with the usual
formula. "I knew I didn't want to go
directly into the workforce from
school," he said. "I wasn't tied down
and I wanted to spend some time in
Israel. You know the saying, `If not now,
when?' Well, I wanted to travel while
I could and see what it would be like
to live there."
Aaron connected with an organi-
zation that offered internships in Tel
Aviv, work experiences based on
interests. The catch was that the
internship was uncompensated.
"The group housed us, but I had to
have money to live while I was
there," Aaron said. "I used my sav-
ings and got scholarships to bring
down the costs, but there was a
gap, and that's where Hebrew Free
Loan stepped in. I have friends who
had student loans from HFL, and
they said good things about the
agency. HFL helped give me an
experience unlike anything I could
have dreamed of. I was immersed in
Israeli life. I didn't teach, I worked
for an amazing, dynamic artist, Ilana
Goor, and had the best time."
Back in the U.S., Aaron pursues
his art and teaches at Mercy High
School, and is considering leading a
student trip to Israel.
"Israel is part of me. It taught me
so much, and I'd love to share that."
