JF

arry Brodsky knows a little bit
about soccer.
In 13 years as the girls soc-
cer coach at Marian High School in
Bloomfield Township, he's compiled a
243-23-29 record, won five Michigan
High School Athletic Association state
championships (2003, 2004, 2009,
2010 and 2012) and finished second in
the state three times (2002, 2013 and
2014).
The Mustangs made it to the Division
2 state championship game June 14 in
Williamston but lost 2-1 to Richland
Gull Lake. It was their only loss of the
season. Marian finished 19-1-1.
Brodsky has also been the boys soc-
cer coach at the adjacent Brother Rice
High School since 2008. His record with
the Warriors is 71-28-23 and includes a
2009 state championship.
He was the boys soccer coach at
Groves High School in Beverly Hills
from 2002-2007. During that time, the
Falcons were 77-33-20.
Needless to say, Brodsky is thrilled
about the spike in interest soccer has
received locally and nationally because
of the World Cup.
And the 1973 Southfield-Lathrup
High School graduate isn't terribly sur-
prised.
"People are more aware of the World
Cup than when it was held four years
ago because of the extensive TV cover-
age he said. "The bigger names are
more well-known.
"Also, more young people have grown
up with soccer:' he said.
Brodsky said one of his Brother Rice
players watched a U.S. World Cup game
at a business in Downtown Detroit and
remarked about how knowledgeable the
fans were.
Brodsky said he was surprised to
pass by three busy soccer complexes
on a recent drive to London, Ontario,
to watch his daughter Allie play with
the U20 women Motor City Football
Club soccer team. Allie plays soccer for
Kalamazoo College.
"Those complexes were packed on a
Wednesday night:' he said.
When he isn't coaching or watch-
ing soccer, Brodsky, 58, runs his own
accounting firm in Farmington Hills.

No Gamble
Creativity paid off at the 32nd annual
B'nai B'rith Golf Classic, held June 2.
A local B'nai B'rith unit with a long
name — Zager-Stone-Tucker-Grant-
Oakland Century-Morgenthau-Mhayim-
Keidan — purchased 10 raffle tickets for
a trip for two to Las Vegas and won.
The 11 unit members who bought
a ticket were going to be entered into
another drawing to win the trip, which
included airfare for two, three nights at
the Venetian and two tickets to the hotel's
main show.
Instead of taking the trip, the unit
decided to split its cash value.
In all, more than 300 tickets at $25
each were sold.
The golf outing was at a new site
(Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield) and back to its traditional
early June date and it went well, said
Bobbie Levine, Great Lakes Region pro-
gram director.
"We've already booked Tam-O-Shanter
for next year," she said.
About 80 golfers participated.
"That's par for the course Levine said,
well aware of her appropriate description.
Outing proceeds will benefit B'nai
B'rith programs, the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, Hillel chapters on col-
lege campuses and the new Great Lakes
Region scholarship fund.
The four inaugural scholarship win-
ners — Alex Sitner, Danielle Keith, Mara
Cranis and Marisa Meyerson — were
introduced at the outing dinner.
Michael Fishman and David Lubin
were chairs of the outing committee.

High Five RBI
Ben Guez, an outfielder who plays for
the Detroit Tigers' Triple-A farm team
in Toledo, knocked in a career-high
five runs June 13 in an 11-0 win over
Buffalo.
Guez hit a two-run homer in the third
inning to put the Mud Hens in front 4-0.
Born in Houston, Texas, Guez played
for the Israel team in the qualification
round for the 2013 World Baseball
Classic. The team's manager was current
Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus.
Guez played baseball for Houston in
the 2003 JCC Maccabi Games and won a
gold medal.
