GAMES®& ARTSFEST®

AUGUST 17-22, 2014

SPECIAL COVERAGE

Down To
The Count!

Host families: JCC
Maccabi & ArtsFest
still needs you!

By Elizabeth Applebaum
Special to the Jewish News

F

orty-eight is the atomic num-
ber of cadmium, the num-
ber of prophets cited in the
Tanach and the number that appeared
on Gerald Ford's football jersey
when he played for the University of
Michigan.
It's also the number of beds still
needed for participants in the JCC
Maccabi Games & ArtsFest.
The event, to be held in Detroit
Aug. 17-22, brings together teens
from around the world for sports
competition, arts workshops, camara-
derie and volunteering.
It also gives participants a chance to
get to know a new community as local
families open their homes and serve
as hosts for the week.
How does it work?
Host families must be Jewish and
be able to house at least two athletes,
providing a bed for each, access to a
washing machine, breakfast each day,
a ride to the JCC or the venue and an
activity on Host Family Night (going
to a movie, having a cookout, going
bowling, for example).
The result is often developing
friendships that last a lifetime and
learning firsthand all about a Jewish
community halfway across the world.
While this year's event has almost
all the host families needed, a few
spots are still open — especially for
families that keep kosher and are
shomer Shabbat.
To date, 607 beds have been found
for the 648 athletes/artists registered
for the 2014 JCC Maccabi Games &
ArtsFest. Of the remaining 41 still
needed, eight must be kosher/shomer
Shabbat homes, and the rest have no
special requirements.
If you're willing to help out, the
JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest could
use your help as a host family or a
volunteer in another area.
For information, call (248) 432-5500
or visit www.2014detroit.org.
