Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah OPENING MEETING Shapiro Havis strives to provide all her clients with a farm-to-table experience at any physical ability. "I have designed these gardens so people of any ability can have a hand in it:' she said. Horticultural therapy is a new burgeoning field offering benefits to a variety of populations with dis- abilities. According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, gardening helps to maintain physi- cal and mental function by providing stimulation plus mood-enhancing sunshine. Gardening is also hailed for its benefits to schoolchildren as a way to reduce stress, combat childhood obesity and teach responsibility. Program managers such as Kristi Davis of JARC in Farmington Hills and Dina Rudashevski of JVS in Southfield recently met with Marc Israel to con- sider if making trips out to the garden for their clients is within the budget of each agency. According to Rudashevski, JVS has a budget of approximately $20 per client per month to spend on outings, and this dollar amount drops slightly in the summer because of the availability of free outdoor programming. JVS is determining if it is within its budget to provide once-a-month outings to the center's garden where seniors can learn gardening skills, create an arts and craft project in the garden's gazebo and then sample dishes created by the resident chefs from food grown in the garden. A group of senior citizens from Huntington Woods soon will come visit the garden, learn about the importance of decreasing our carbon footprint by buying local produce and growing food organically. Then, they will pot their own plants to take home with them as a gardening project. 111.
