Jewish Women's Foundation awards
$260,490 in grants.

T

he Jewish Women's Foundation
of Metropolitan Detroit
(JWF) marked its 15th grant-
making year with $260,490 granted
in support of 13 organizations. Grants
focus on mentoring, economic and
social empowerment, domestic abuse
prevention for Jewish women and girls,
support for cancer patients and survivors,
and enriching the lives of senior citizens.

Local Allocations:
$147,990 (All one-year)
• BBYO: Building Entrepreneurship
($15,990). An eight-month program for
ninth-12th grade Jewish girls to learn how to
create businesses and become female leaders.
• Jewish Family Service: Jewish Coalition
Against Domestic Abuse ($15,000). JCADA
looks to raise awareness and reduce the
shame and isolation about domestic abuse.
• Jewish Family Service: Legal Referral
Service ($15,000). JFS has recruited more
than 150 lawyers willing to help their clients
with their legal needs for free.
• Jewish Community Center: Cancer
Thrivers Network for Jewish Women
($17,000). For outreach, education and

health-related programing.
• Jewish Community Center: Camp
Scholarship for Children of Single Jewish
Mothers ($20,000). Children of single Jewish
mothers will receive camp scholarships.
• Tamarack Camps: From Single Mom to
Extended Family ($20,000) Challenge Grant.
Provides a portion of Tamarack Camps'
$1.14 million financial aid program.
• Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute: Healing Arts Program for Jewish
Women ($10,000). A free therapeutic
program involving reiki, meditation, guided
imagery, massage, art therapy and yoga.
• Hillel of Metro Detroit: What's KosHER
About ...? ($5,000). A female rabbi discusses
food, marital/divorce laws, sex, Shabbat
observance, religious labels and modesty.
• Michigan State University Hillel/ Hillel
Campus Alliance: Empower ($5,000).
Educating Jewish students to be better
prepared for challenges and opportunities in
their future careers.
• Jewish Senior Life: Empowering the
Mind Through Cultural Education ($15,000).
JSL will continue the education of the older
adult females in their residences.
• Holocaust Memorial Center: Anne Frank
Program for Summer Camps ($10,000).
Offering camps serving Jewish middle-
school age girls, a field trip to the HMC.

and new immigrant mothers in health
and family cohesiveness.
• Orr Shalom for Children and Youth
at Risk: Overcoming the Trauma of Rape
and Sexual Abuse for Girls in Out of Home
Care ($45,000 over 3 years). Residential,
educational and therapeutic services for
children at risk.
• Orr Shalom for Children and Youth at
Risk: The Adolescent Girls Empowerment
and Leadership Program ($15,000, single
year). To involve 15 teenage girls at
Orr Shalom in the daily running of the
therapeutic overnight vacation camp.
• WEPOWER: Women's Electoral
Power: Women for Future Leadership
Training Program in the Galilee ($15,000,
single year). To train women to become
leaders within the municipal public
arena.
